A mini-brag and a BBE question.
« on: June 07, 2015, 06:58:08 AM »
Yesterday we journeyed rather far to go to a big antique mall (over an hour's drive) since a coworker had let me know that she'd seen some MLPs there. (For those of you in the Kansas City Area, The Brass Armadillo).  I was happy to find a lot of ponies, mostly G4 and G3, but there were a handful of G1.  I kept my selection to three due to budget constraints (the prices were not outrageous but they were not bargain bin prices either).
(And I also got a super cute ornament, I fear kitty-themed Hallmark ornaments may become my secondary thing to try to collect..)

But anyway! The question. One of my finds was a BBE Baby Gusty. Her eyes look rust-free and I see no signs of tail rust, but her neck.... ew. Is it OK to boil BBEs? Will it hurt her eyes? I haven't cleaned one yet (my childhood BBEs are in the "I'm putting this off as much as I can" part of the To-Do Pile).

She needs a soak in some CLR rather than boiling her.  :)  That's going to clean up those eyes faster than anything.

Oh and use gloves when dealing with CLR!

And will CLR help the grossness on her neck too? That's my main concern, really- the eyes aren't so bad but I suppose they could be better. All my ponies so far haven't had any problems soap and water couldn't handle so I haven't had to bring any serious chemicals to the party yet..

Thanks, guys! I was pretty excited about them, especially the sea pony since I only have a few sea ponies left from childhood and they are well-used, so finding one I'm NOT going to have to clean was nice!

Nope, the dark brown spots are known as Age Spots, Vinyl Detoriation Syndrome, or Pony Cancer.  :(  Sadly there isn't anything you can do about those.  Sometimes sunfading will lighten them but they aren't going to be removable.

Rats.. I couldn't tell if it was cancer or dirt/rust/mold, was hoping it was something I'd be able to fix.

ETA: I guess I will just have to either attempt sunfading  or just find her a nice ribbon to wear around her neck.  :P

If you don't mind experimenting then you can apply peroxide paste on the marks and use sun light or UV lamp to lighten them up, cover the rest of her or at least make sure the symbols and blush are protected as those can easily fade. I wouldn't recommend this on harder to find ponies as it's difficult to predict the outcome.

Thanks for the advice! I will let you guys know how things turn out for her :)
