Sci-fi/Fantasy book recommendations?
« on: April 29, 2015, 02:45:07 PM »
:read: I recently read The Martian and it has got me wanting to read more sci-fi. I also love fantasy novels, so share your favorites! I'd love to get some recommendations of books, because I am all out of ideas. I keep re-reading Ray Bradbury short stories and some of my favorite Mercedes Lackey series, and I'd love to branch out a bit more :)

There's an author from the 60s called Algys Budrys, can't remember all the titles just off hand (I'm not at home). One is 'Who' another 'Some Will Not Die', there quite a few. All the ones I've read by him have been excellent!!

The Dragonriders of Pern series - it fit under the category- Ann McCaffery started it but her son Tod also started up his own books in the series. He wrote a few with his mother before she passed away.

As far as fantasy you might enjoy The Chronicles of Narnia of the Harry Potter series or The Hunger Games series or The Twilight Saga.  I've read all the books in those series, but if you want to shy away from popular books you might also try His Dark Materials.  It's a 3 book set which contains:  The Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.  The Golden Compass movie is loosely based on The Northern Lights and the story expands from there.  I enjoyed the books more.  There are also two short stories called:  Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon A Time In The North.  Lyra's Oxford focuses on Lyra sometime after the last book a little older basically and the second book focuses on Lee Scoresby when he was younger and met Iorek Byrnison for the first time.  I have the 3 book set as one large book and the two short stories.  I enjoyed the books better than The Golden Compass, well Northern Lights anyway.  The book goes into more detail and things are different.

Ooh, also just remembered The Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Mauriller. I'll probably keep thinking of more!
Yes to the His Dark Materials series mentioned above by the way!

I suggest anything by Terry Pratchett.  Especially the Disc World.  Not really sci fi, but very fantasy.  Also the Long Earth books (those are sci fi), VERY good, it's about 'stepping' or going from one dimension to the other.  It's hard to explain but it involves a potato.

If you like werewolves and vampires and the fae.  Then I suggest Patricia Briggs, Mercy Thompson novels.  It's about a walker (Native American shapeshifter, who lives next door to the alpha werewolf in the area.)  It's based in the present.  I highly suggest these two authors!

And of course there is the tongue in cheek trilogy, the five novels of 'A Hitch Hikers Guide the Galaxy'  They're very different, and I personally think everyone should read them, then you will understand the babel fish.  :)

Try the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and finished by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan's death.  It's a wonderful fantasy series that's not to be started on a whim.  There are fourteen novels, one prequel and a companion guide.  I highly recommend it though!

CS Friedman is a great author who writes between the lines of science fiction and fantasy.  I like her books because she has a lot of female protaganists and it's not a total sausage festival like SOME fantasy and scifi series I've read!
