Rehair tool help?
« on: April 17, 2015, 10:20:37 AM »
Ok, I'm lost.

I'm currently struggling to replace the needle in my rehair tool from DollyHair- it's this thing.

At first, I just unscrewed it, put the needle inside the black part and put it back together.
But it keeps pushing the needle inside the tool when I try to put hair in a pony head.

I've tried gluing the needle inside with Mod Podge multiple times, both from the inside and outside of the tool, with the same results.
So I'm puzzled. Help please?  :stressed:

My rehair tool is a piece of dowl with the needle pushed in one end.

I've had it for around 7 years now!

A dowl/dowel is just a small piece of soft wood, about the shape and size of a crayon or short pencil.

When my tool does this, often it is because the hole isn't large enough (in which case I use a tack to widen it) or I haven't wrenched the tool tight enough. Sometimes I still seem to have trouble after trying these two solutions though.

I hope you find a solution! I only use an x-acto knife with the blade replaced with a rehairing needle. I always leave my home-cut needles quite long so that they don't slip inside the tool too much. I don't know the structure of Dollyhair's tool so I don't know if this helps any :/

I vote for Xacto handle as well.  I added one of those pencil grip things to mine.  Easier on the fingers and less slippage.

My sister actually had a lot more trouble with the Xacto handle. I also couldn't get it to work when I tried to show her how. It only grips from two sides, while your tool grips from four sides. It seems like different tools work better for different people though. On the plus side, trying out the Xacto handle would be pretty cheap!

I was thinking about buying one of these but I'm not so sure now LOL I'll just stick to thread/dental floss and a needle

I did that for years, and despite the occasional problem, I love rehairing tools so much better. The time the other method takes and its own little issues was worth changing to the other method for me. It's fun to experiment and see what works best for you.

All Xactos must not be created equal - mine grips on all four sides!

Oh, I had no idea! I have only seen the two sided ones that grip the two sides of a thin traditional Xacto knife blade. If it grips from all four, it should be just as good as a rerooting tool, I imagine, since they would have the same design.
