yikes. I feel your pain
we used to battle pharaoh ants for years in my parents' flat (WTH do ants do on the 9th floor of a block of flats? :yucky: ), and it was truly ugly. besides having uneliminatable travel routes in some uncomfortable places and a weird interest towards anything electronic, they also chose some weird places to build their nests (with no relation to sugar or food either)... like a wardrobe, my hi-fi or VHS tapes. the latter were not salvageable  but thankfully they didn't tackle any of my collections, or my ponies. I have no problem with ants, but when they come inside and mess with my precious stuff that's a completely different thing
I wish you the best of luck to win the battle against them as soon as possible, and until that I hope they don't go near your ponies and collections again.

Augh, why did I click?! *shudder*

We get ant invasions here in the summer, but I've never seen them go for ponies. (They usually prefer the cat kibble.) The ones we get are just foraging, so a few strategically placed baits of sugar and borax usually kills them off pretty quickly. I don't know what I'd do if they were trying to actually move in!

After you kill off the ants, be sure to give Octavia a good wash with soap. Like you wouldn't anyway! But I know some ants can leave pheromone chemicals on surfaces to lead their comrades to whatever sweet spot they've found, and I wouldn't want them to try to set up shop all over again.

And now, I must go shower and try to scrub my brain.  :yikes:

 I had to.

Thanks for the good laugh, I honestly needed that

I hate ants. They tend to flock to the webbing in between my toes and fingers and go to town :/
I agree that you should try treating the problem areas instead of bombing your house, that should be a last resort.

I think your method should kill them off.   I've always liked ants but they can be such a nuisance!   I once had them move into my iron.  It wasn't nice to discover them that way.  They all got steamed.  :(

Diatomaceous earth. Good stuff for using on ants and other bugs with exoskeletons.

Oh my goodness! Poor Octavia!!!!

I agree with something like popping her in a freezer bag and then in the freezer to kill them off. The vinyl itself could the attraction depending on what its base components are and of course the fact she is hollow, I believe. Good luck getting her sorted out!

ants have been  so bad this year.
i know ive spent  about $200   so far on various   products to try and   defeat them
so far   limited  success.  as there are literally  hundreds of   nests  around  both inside and out  in the yard.
having a lot of animals  also makes it difficult  when selecting what  stuff to put where as it is poison after all.

those ants on Octave look quite big ,
im having  the most problems with the  very tiny  little yellow / brown  ones  atm

I wonder what it is about this  year  that  ants are   in plague proportions.

I know yesterday at work we discovered our dry store wasn't sealed properly... there were ants EVERYWHERE! My boss is crazy OCD... the hilarity! That aside though, I'd freeze or drown them myself. Or there's ant foam with little nozzles that you can put in small openings, too... I'd probably pop that in there, foam them out, then rinse thoroughly.

What worked best for us a few summers ago was baby powder.  I wound up trying it because like many people we have dogs and cats so I was hesitant to put down any poison/bait traps.  Baby powder apparently dries out their exoskeleton and they will not track through it either.  Or at least not more than once.

If you can find out where they are getting into the house, sprinkle the powder liberally all around the area and anywhere you've seen them.  We waited about a week before cleaning it all up and wiping down the kitchen.  A little messy looking, but not harmful to the pets and kids.  Good luck!

D8  EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!! Oh JESUS! Clove oil, put a barrier of petroleum jelly or clove oil around your pony shelf! Clove oil destroys their pheromone trails and kills ants on contact, and they can't get past petroleum jelly. But clove is your best bet; it smells good, won't make your ponies gross, and those ants will book it!
