I tend to call them "designs" since some of them, like TAFs, are too complex to be a "symbol".

Yeah,  I used to always just cxall them designs.
I do use cutie mark now when specifically talking about the later generations.  But honestly, I really don't tend to discuss symbols or cutie marks much.

Symbol.  The term "cutie mark" sounds infantile.

Symbol!

Infact like a pp I renamed my original ponies according to their symbol.  Powder was snowflake, cherries jubilee was cherry etc

I used to say "symbol," but I really like the phrase "Cutie Mark." :3 I tend to use it only when discussing G3/G4 ponies, though, or I find that other collectors are confused/displeased.

Cutie marks!! Even though I was pony fan before FiM, I just think it's cuter.. Lol but I won't put down anyone who calls it what they desire to call it.

I will never understand why anybody cares either way :P

I say both without even thinking about it. I've sometimes said 'cutie mark' for a G1 and used 'symbol' for a G4 :/

I agree that 'cutie mark' makes it sound more of a thing, if you know what I mean ;) And for that I like it better ^.^
