Sealants
« on: February 24, 2015, 04:27:05 PM »
Hey all, what sort of sealants do you prefer? Matte or glossy? Do you even seal your customs?

I use glossy Mr. Superclear but I am starting to think that maybe I am going to switch to matte  Any recommendations?

I've used a few over the years, but Golden is my favorite. Albeit pricy, a little goes a long way and it doesn't yellow. I use the matte variety for all details except the eyes, which are sealed with the glossy varnish to produce a realistic effect.

Folk Art Artists' Varnish (matte and gloss), it's polyurethane based. :)

I was going to start a topic about this, but this one will probably help.  I've used several types of sealers, like mod podge matte and glossy, and my ponies come out sticky!  Right now I"m using liquitex gloss medium varnish and it only leaves the black paint sticky.  HELP!

I prefer Dullcote.  The matte finish looks more factory-like, and I tend to favor Hasbro-style customs.  Unlike some sealants like Modpodge it doesn't get sticky in my experience, and so far I haven't seen signs of it yellowing.  At one point I experimented with another acrylic sealer (can't remember the brand) and it yellowed horribly.

I was actually going to post a similar question.  Has anyone used Folk Art Clearcote or Pearlcote?  My local Michael's had some on sale so I was curious if it was worth picking up or not.

I was using mod podge  but it  reacts to getting wet way to easily and is not the most durable  i've found
so  now i'm   using Liquitex products  but I may end up switching  brands again yet,

Matte mod podge right now. Urgh, I don't know if it's bad bottle, but I applied it to a few ponies that were not FBR's and it looked white after drying. (Usually it dries clear and it's all good, I don't put it on thick at all.) I had to dilute it with a wet q-tip after it dried on the pony. So bizarre.

Another Testors person here, both matte and gloss.  MLP4me was it super humid or very cold by you when you did it?  Temp and humidity can wreck havoc with sealants.

It's just been cold. I'm going to start to diluting it before it's applied. This is a new bottle and I've been keeping a plastic bag over the top when I put the cover on so it will hopefully last longer without getting dried up chunks inside. It's just bizarre as both the ponies it happened on are purple and not FBR's.
