ok new fabric question.
is there a type of fabric that is similar to skin, but can be either dyed or bleached?

I'm curious as to how minky reacts to dye or bleach.
anyone try it?
also other fabrics like fleece, or fur.

I would bet fleece would not take dye well.   Also curious how they would react to heat/washing

For fleece and minky you need to use a special dye for polyesters  IMO it's not worth it...

same thing for fake fur, you can't dye it with regular dye... however you CAN color it with acrylic paint :) what you do is take watered down acrylic paint and paint it generously onto the backing of the fur and then use a slicker brush to brush the paint into the fur pile. I've gotten very good results with that method  :)

That's a really cool idea, Dainty!  :D  I wish you hadn't said anything because now I have ideas...

But no, minky won't dye with any *safe* home methods.  Dispersion dye is pretty toxic.  I've not heard good things about Dyelon's polyester dye either.  I just don't think it gives the results people want.

Minky doesn't bleach, either.

For skin, micro suede, I bought peach and tea dyed it tan. So I think other dyes would work too.

I also dyed white Shannon 3 inch pile fur teal, but it took 4 dye bathes and then letting it dry, brush it out, they paint on another layer of dye. Turned out okay. Definitely a noticeable difference.

Not sure how helpful this is, but fursuit makers are forever talking about something called antron fleece, or Muppet fleece. They say it dyes very easily, and hides seams. I also hear it can only be bought online, and it's more expensive than conventional fleece.

Will make custom plushie for MIB Fashion Style Applejack. PM for details!

well the fleece/minky project is an oc pony plush of Meron.
my soda pop pony. she has white bubbles all over her body and i was really hoping i wouldn't have to embroider or paint each one.

Hmmm... Yeah your best bet is either sewing in the markings or embroidering probably... you could paint minky with watered down paint but it wouldn't be as fluffy anymore, you'd want to paint the colored parts on white minky though not the other way around

oh well. yeah i don't mind if she's stiff as long as she's accurate, but i don't want to paint her hold body. be way too much.

i'm already having a hay dilly dilly of a time trying to figure out what to do about her hair....

i will not give up though.
i'll think of something.
she just might become a back burner project for now. sad face.

Ooh well hmm actually you might be able to paint the white bubbles on?
I was picturing solid white bubbles and I was thinking if you used white paint it wouldn't look very solid  but from your design it looks like painting with white on green would make it look semi-transparent like the ref?
For the mane I think fake fur would look great :) And with the painting technique I mentioned you could get that gradient.

Edit: lol and for your other question.. anything mostly cotton will work :--) for skin fabric and also actually as a minky substitute now that i think about it try velour? I've seen 80% cotton velour which should take dye ok.
