Is it ok to spray Sanitizer on Ponies?
« on: January 02, 2015, 07:21:23 AM »
I don't consider myself a germophobe (is that the right word?) but I must confess that I'm a wee bit conscientious about second hand toys, I love getting them for myself and my daughter but I hafta sanitize them, whether they come from the swapmeet, or an online buy. I wash plastic toys and spritz them with sanitizer and used plush toys go in the washing machine asap. is it ok to continue spritzing my ponies with sanitizer or will the harsh chemicals screw them up? is there a better way to do it?

It depends what you are using and the chemical content. If its a one off spray (or a couple of times) when you first get the pony with a fairly generic hand sanitiser then I am sure that will be fine. If its like a weekly thing then yes I would start to get a little concerned. They are made out of a soft plastic and nylon hair, not plastics which are designed to constantly be chemically treated or exposed. It would particularly be the hair I would be worried about - nylon can be huffy depending on what you expose it to and it can become brittle unfortunately.

So long story short..if we are talking one off I am sure fine, if its on going I would resist doing it too much and find a softer option (such as a regular baby wipe wipe down).

I usually use a non-bleach general cleaning anti-bacterial wipe.  I have not had an issue using these, the paintwork stays put, the dirt comes off and the pony smells like citrus after, which unless its one of those ponies with a scented symbol, is always nice :)

I prefer using a wipe, since it won't get all on the hair and I won't have to worry about over soaking the pony and risking rust and mold.

I've noticed that antibacterial sanitiser seems to react badly with some hard plastics. I once used some to clean my landline phone and it dissolved the first layer of plastic, and it etches the print off some printed plastics, such as the letters on computer keyboards. I'm really not sure how pony plastic/cutie marks would react to alcohol based cleansers but personally I wouldn't risk it. I just clean the ponies with some water and washing up liquid since I figure if it's good enough for the stuff I eat off it's probably good enough for plastic ponies

I'd say a gentle to moderate cleansing with some antibacterial soap is the way to go.  It's harmless to the ponies and you can clean their hair with it too.  Just be careful not to get water inside them.

Yeah I wash them with soap then spray them once with Lysol, I don't  spray them again after that. Err...I think I'll lay off the sanitizer Dawn

Thanks for all your advice :)

I wipe every second-hand Pony with an Equate antibacterial hand wipe. :) It doesn't do any damage and I only do it once when they first come to me.

This is what I do. I do wash with foaming anti-bacterial hand soap, then shampoo, then conditioner. Trust me they're clean ;)

Same as before - try and use it only limited if you want to (and avoid the hair if you can); they are stronger chemicals than a simple baby wipe  so best to go with caution.

You can use liquid antibacterial hand soaps like Dial are almost like alcohol to kill germs, that's what's my dermatologyst said because my skin is allergic to strong cleeners like those  antibacterials  and also dishwashers  so I use gloves when washing things

Antibacterial soap sounds like a great idea :like: also I mostly use baby wipes to clean ponies. If they are super dirty when they arrive, I clean them with acetone, but do avoid the eyes and symbols because pure acetone takes them right off!
