Home made sharpie mugs?
« on: October 04, 2014, 04:46:45 PM »
Has anyone tried to make home made mugs using sharpie? If yes, what type of sharpie did you use? How long did you bake it in the oven for and at what temp? Did they turn out well? did the design hold up?

Here's my ACNH creator code. I thought I might share it, since I have quite a few pony designs.

I follow this method: http://dontmindifidoblog.blogspot.com/2014/02/diy-personalized-mugs.html

It has worked out well so far  :)

Make sure to hand wash the mugs versus putting them in a dishwasher.

Yes Kaoskat. I have seen all kinds of DIY pictures and links for sharpie mugs. Here is one link I have looked at http://www.livingwellspendingless.com/2014/02/10/sharpie-mug/

I was just wondering if anyone has had any success with these. If there are any tips any one has. I  guess you have to make sure it's an oil based Sharpie (not water). I want to make some mugs as Christmas gifts and was wondering if anyone had any luck with these.

Thanks for the link  lmurphree =). I will have to follow that links method. I just love the idea of a personalized mug! You can do so much like put a favorite quotes ,or inside jokes on them. I am glad to hear SOMEONE has had success making these =)

Yup I've done them!

My designs have stayed up pretty well. I do not use a dishwasher. I used regular sharpies on these and they worked fine.

My advice:
-Use a -cheap- mug. Dollar tree or Walmart are where I get mine. The sharpie has to sink into the glaze on the mug, and it's easier for it to do that on a cheap mug because it has a thin glaze.
-Place mugs in the oven when it is -still cold-. Let the mugs warm up with the oven, otherwise they may crack. Same goes for cooling down. Leave the mugs in the oven at least an hour after you shut it off so they can cool slowly.
-Bake at 400 degrees

That's about all the advice I have!
