To me, they both look the same but its the Smaragdina. I think she got them from the IBC, they had some kind of program where breeders will send you a pair and you have to bred so many for sale or something like that.

I had 24 at one time. Males were in divided 10 gallon tanks and about 6 females were in a soriety in a 20 gallon.
There are the two I have now. The girl (Erza)  now has this whole tank to herself and the guy (still unnamed) has been relocated to a 5 gallon. She kept sneaking into the other side and I also don't have space for hundreds of jars filled with bettas. Maybe someday.

ah yep'

they are  different  i did find a neat little reference thing  when i was surfing the net before that shows the difference between the species.

note. not the best photos tho some of the fish look stressed in the images (washed out colours)
but it's still a handy guide that shows what to look for.

I got all of my original wild types off of Auqbid.com   as well as a number of  various  show type  splendens
mostly   half moon dragon plakats  , half moon dragons , some nice crowns etc.

I remember some of them were very expensive back then  well over $50 per fish for the  fancy splendens and  something like $70 or $80 per pair for the wild types .   this is of course  including all the import fees and such.
mind you tho this was quite a few years ago now,  more than 6 years easily.

I know of the IBC ,  the  guy who owns one of the Aquariums in town here has involvement with them  i think'
hes quite passionate about  wild types and show bettas.

I though of joining the IBC but I think it may be overkill for me, I'm not a breeder and I don't have any thing that would qualify for those "betta shows." Plus I like Veiltails the most and I know they are looked down upon in official circles. Most of mine come from walmart or petco but I do like to look the ones on aquabid.com
