Thanks for the support, everyone. I had another thought - I live in a fairly damp environment anyway, plus I had the ponies in the basement (that's where the best window is) so maybe it had to do with the humidity?

There is another silver lining - the ponies don't really look terrible even with the staining. Birthday is so busy anyway that the stains are a little harder to notice, and Gladiolus looks really unique with it. Of course, I had been planning to sell them, so that doesn't help me much. But if I end up keeping them, it won't pain me to look at them. :)
I'll put something here some time

I haven't used painter's tape for some time for exactly this reason.  It didn't happen every time I used it, but I definitely had a few that developed those purple marks from the tape.  I had a couple different types so it could have been one particular one that was causing the problem.  Those marks do sunfade off pretty quickly if you want to give it another try.  I mostly use foil now (clear tape to keep small sections in place when necessary) and sometimes white craft paint (needs to be thick as pink symbols will often still fade through the paint).

That is good to know! Sun fading seems dangerous. I am such a coward I think I would rather endure the stains than the peril of messing something up!

Oh No!! I can totally understand I've had some silly pony accidents... running the straighting iron over ice crystals tail thinking it was turned off and cooled down, but was still on and hot hot hot - melted half the tail off... :(

Oh no how horrible!

Unfortunately it is something I would never use - anything with any kind of colour to it, any kind of dye or pigment really is something you should avoid.

You should manage to fade the marks out with the sun however :) So not all is lost.

I'm glad to hear they have sunfading potential. *sigh* Maybe I'll try it just one more time!  :P With easily-removable WHITE PAINT this time!

I use painter's tape... to secure the aluminum foil.  :)

Hope the second round of sunfading goes more smoothly for you!

That's it. I am so done with pony restoration. It seems like every time I attempt something other than a cleaning I end up having to write a "what not to do" thread.  -_-

So basically, I was sunfading white ponies using blue painter's tape to protect the bodies and symbols. The tape left pale purple marks all over them, which I was not expecting because, you know, it's painter's tape. But I was foolish to assume it would work the same way on plastic as it does on walls. Maybe it left marks because it got too hot in the sun, or maybe because it was left untouched for several months. Not sure. Whatever caused it, I recommend not using it.

So now I have a (G3) August Gladiolus who got the worst of the lavender plague, and a Birthday Pony with it in places, too. Magic Eraser is doing basically nothing.

Perhaps the purple marks can be... sunfaded? *chuckling that develops into insane laughter*

OMG, I had purple marks show up on some of my sunfaded ponies too, why didn't I suspect the painter's tape...!!!!

Would masking tape work better, I wonder? It's white, but it's stronger... :(

I would say no to masking tape. I bought a G1 from someone who (if I remember right) said they used masking tape and there is a lot of very sticky residue left over. And of course it's right on the symbols. I'm still trying to figure out what I could use to get it off safely.

Argh, what a shame. Good luck if you sunfade them again :)

I did something similar with electrician's tape. I figured it wouldn't leave a sticky residue so I used it to cover Gusty's eyes when I was sunfading her, luckily I checked her often enough that I noticed she had yellowed more under the tape and quickly removed it all.

I'm too cautious to use paint so I just glad wrap with several layers and use a marker to carefully colour over eyes and symbols with alfoil on the hair.
I also hate bobby pins, they rusted a tail I was trying to boil-set into curls once *shakes fist*

Electrician's tape always leaves nasty sticky residue. I never use it unless I don't plan to take it off later.

Whenever I use painters tape I wrap the pony in a layer of plastic wrap first...

I was latex moulding a pony's horn and wings and stained her all yellow in this areas. :( It happens-- if you haden't, you wouldn't have posted it and we wouldn't have learned to avoid it! We all make mistakes but, with the awesomeness of the forum, we might be able to help each other avoid all of is making all of them! I'm sorry, but also (I mean this in the most genuine and encouraging way), thank you!
