Fundraising Advice
« on: June 04, 2014, 10:58:52 PM »
I am running an online fundraiser for my husband's Stage IV cancer. Which for the few days it has been up did alright. But, it seemed to stall a little bit. I have been pushing through social media from my page asking people to share and the online classifieds ads for my town. I was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions on how to draw attention to your cause? I am new to this and a little afraid to be too "In Your Face".

It probably depends what kind of fundraising you are doing. Is it just a straight out donation or are you perhaps running something "in aid of" and raising money that way?

Thinking positive thoughts for your husband

It's one givefoward. It is an online donation site. So straight up donation. I was thinking of running an event but, thinking about it seems to overwhelm me.

Do you have any friends or family that would be willing to help you plan an event?  I understand it being overwhelming, especially with everything already on your mind, but if you know anyone that might have experience with organizing something like a 5k or if you know anyone that would be willing to donate talent (such as a benefit concert), those could be options.  Again, if the thought of that seems overwhelming, pitch the thought to near and dears that might be better equipped to handle that sort of thing at the moment.

Yeah it kind of sucks that I am the family. Everyone is just, "Oh he has cancer." And go on with their lives. Everything seems on my shoulders.  >_<

I completely understand how overwhelming it all must be for you. All I can honestly say is when fundraising you will get much more help and more donations if you do something "in aid" of your funding. I help fundraise for a local charity; if we go out on the streets just with buckets/cans for donation we get a good response but not great; if we "bag pack" at  a local supermarket [even if we dont do much but stand and smile and have a chat with customs who prefer packing their own bags] we get a great response and many more donations. It doesnt have to be anything grand and you could do it at someone elses event [perhaps there is another charity/business organising a 5K run or similar event you could piggy back on to]? But you will find it helpful in getting sponsors and more donations and even  raising general awareness.

Have you reached out to the charities that often support families and loved ones with similar cancer types?

That's a great idea Kat, I can handle that. Squirmy, there doesn't seem to be a lot of people around here with Renal Cell seems to be relativity rare. I was going to talk to his nurses if they had any ideas to help. I am just afraid when his vacation hours run out and he can't pay his insurance with them poop will hit the fan.

Do you have a hashtag for posting on Twitter?  I know that's silly but it sometimes makes it easier to get the word out...

*still calls it the pound sign* >>

I don't think it 'has' to be a specific type. I would still ask a local charity dealing with cancer in general for help.

And, I hate to say it, but others are right.  Unless that person is a role model in your community, you would be hard pressed to get outright money for one specific person.  Usually people are more successful in getting donations in aid of treatment in general, then donate it to your local charity.

Maybe try a raffle?
