I need a new camera
« on: April 25, 2014, 02:45:17 PM »
So the time has finally come to replace my trusty 2006 Sony Cybershot. It has served me well. Travelled the world, attended many a con, many a gig, but it just doesn't cut it any longer. This has not been an easy decision and I want to make sure my new one will be worthy.

So tell me about your camera. What do you use it for? What do you like about it? What could be better?

I'm not looking for an SLR or anything of the sort. I'm looking for something light weight, durable. Something that will take beautiful landscapes, lit up buildings in the dark, close ups of ponies and moving rockstars on a stage equally well.

Does such a thing exist?

With help of a member here we found a wonderful new Sony, the newer Cyber crap DSC-HX 100 or HX 100V I forget which is which.  Takes great photos has a super zoom and tons of modes.  About the only thing that drive the imp and I batty is sometimes the auto focus will get confused when going for tight shots but we have both been getting better at getting it around that.

I have a ton of shots on my crocuscottage photo bucket account you can peak at but I just uploaded this one to a different account to show

My Canon Powershot SD1300IS has served me quite well. I got it a couple Christmases ago, so I'd imagine you could get one for a good price. Here's some example shots:

I use a Nikon D3100 DSLR. For some photos, my blog showcases all images from my camera:

or, for how INCREDIBLE the video quality is (full 1080pHD) you can see the videos on my YouTube Channel:

This camera was what we were taught to use in AS Level Photography (which I hated, but LOVED the camera, and it was my EXTREMELY wonderful 18th birthday present) there isn't a day that I would want to be without it. Only flaw is if you are filming videos of yourself (ahem, Youtubers...) you don't have a flip out lens to see if you're in focus, so if you're looking for this level of quality, with a flip out lens, I'd recommend the more pricey Canon 700D or 600D (which I eventually want to save for!) If you do get a D3100, and want a 55-300mm lens, I have one I can sell to you with everything (box etc.) like new :)

I know you said you weren't looking at an SLR, but it's worth considering :) If not, I also have a Nikon S3100 Coolpix, which is magnificent, and I use it to vlog. I'd highly recommend it!
