Pony restoration help and questions (lots of pictures)
« on: March 31, 2014, 02:38:06 PM »
So now that I've gotten back into my ponies I wanted to start getting my childhood ponies back in shape.  I was able to get them clean with a magic eraser but their hair still needs work among other things.

First is Skippety Doo:
I want to deflock her since well it's in poor shape to begin with.  That first pictures shows where I started on her leg which had a dime size rubbed off spot anyway.  I did a little with nail polish remover but it's going to take forever.  Any tips on how to deflock her faster/easier?

Next Powder and Firefly:
Both have mismatching bodies and heads.  Hair is in good condition other than rust in Powder's tail.  Now my question is can I do anything to even out the mismatch colors or do I just live with it?

Princess Moondust:
Has frizzy/dry hair!  And faded hair.  How do I tame frizz/dryness with all that tinsel?

And lastly Cha Cha:
Poor girl's hair is fried.  Can it even be saved? And if it can, how?  She looks like a powder puff.

Anyway I'm going to keep track of my progress.  I have a few white ponies that need sun fading.

1. Jasco paint stripper.  You can get it at Lowe's/Home Depot.  WEAR GLOVES, or you will be burned.

2.  No, sadly the head/body mismatch can't be fixed.

3.  Heaps of conditioner and a flat iron.  Be careful with the tinsel - while you can use the iron to straighten it, the hat can strip the color from it.  You'll be left with straight silver tinsel.  Just use LOTS of good, thick conditioner and a lower temp on the iron.

4.  Flat iron again.  It may not be possible to save her hair completely but it will help.  The ends look like they will not be fixable.

Good luck!  :)

Sometimes mismatch can be fixed with sunfading, but those are tricky colors.    If you decide not to mess with it, you can always give them a scarf or necklace to hide the part where the mismatched colors meet. It tricks the eye into not realizing there's a difference. Plus, Powder would look adorable with a tiny winter scarf...
I'll put something here some time

And a mask or be in a well ventilated area...or you will end up seeing pink flying ponies never mind deflocking a green one. :P

Oh yeah, lol!  I always deflock outside so I never think about people having to do it in enclosed spaces.

Yes, you can put Jasco over symbols and paint, but be careful not to scrub TOO hard over those places.  I have had whole eyes slough off but not often and only on REALLY nasty ponies that might have some other sort of problems going on too.

Frizz is tricky, as some haircolours come out better than others when you defrizz. I say give it a try! Keep a cup of conditioner/water mix handy, and have the hair wet all the time, and flat-iron like a plug at a time. Hard work and takes time, but most of the time, it's fixable. The only hair colour I've given up on is the neon yellow/chartreuse hair. if it's frizzy, there's no way of saving it. D:

Tinsel can be de-frizzed by gently stretching it using a tweezer (grab at the very tips and pull). Just be careful as g1 tinsel can be brittle, and don't pull too hard or you'll pull it out!
