Help me ID this 80s (90s?) cartoon?

This has been bugging me for years, so I'm hoping you guys can help me finally figure out what this show is. It was about these colourful creatures (they might have been combinations of animals like the Wuzzles, but that isn't the show I'm after) that lived on a star shaped "planet", I can vaguely remember the intro where you saw the star that looked like it was just cut out of the ground like a cookie, if that makes sense.

I know it's not a lot to go on, but any help is much appreciated!

While this topic is here, there's a cartoon I've been trying to figure out the name of for several years now.  It came out in the 80's.  It was about a little mermaid.  She had blonde hair, and a blue fin.  There was a doll that came out for it.  I don't remember much after that except there was a villian that was a pirate octopus.
