Question about Brush & Grow baits
« on: January 28, 2014, 01:20:06 PM »
Has anyone dealt with Brush & Grows and their mechanisms before? I have a Braided Beauty with brittle hair. Hair just keeps breaking when you brush. I thought I'll try to rehair her or turn her into a Medley, but the retracting mechanism in the neck seems tricky, so I am wondering if anyone knows how to deal with it. Is it fine for the pony to go completely without the mechanism?

I've made a custom BnG Mimic in the past---it was a little frustrating but she ended up working great in the end!

I would prefer that a BnG work if I buy it as a custom---but that's just me.

I've taken many of these apart to fix- and while some can be easily fixed (sometimes the hair gets knotted up and then stuck) there are a lot that have broken bits from over-eager tugging.

The mechanism is plastic- so once an essential part snaps- there isn't much hope for getting it working again.

So I guessif you wanted to be sure that your custom had the brush n grow action- you could either buy a bunch of them accepting the risk that they may be completely broken-  or hold out for one that works- even a little bit (I'd say look for one that works just a little bit- as these are the ones that are easy to fix with a bit of patience)

The youtube tutorial that BarbedDragon linked is the one I've used in the past, it's great!

If you don't want to use the mechanism you can re-hair and re-tail like normal, but it is used in place of the plug so you either keep it in to keep the head on (or maybe just part of it), or take it out and glue the head back on.

Good luck ^.^

ive done one and a half BnGs (Moonstone is finished and rehomed with BerryMouse- tho sadly she doesn't work) and I have a Fizzy almost complete and collecting dust on my WiP shelf. just have to put in the tail on that one but not in the mood to mess with it atm lol!

I know Alatariel http://mlparena.com/index.php?action=profile;u=14011 has made a few functioning ones and loves tinkering with the mechanical bits. she also made a vid sometime ago on how to do it.

i have made 2 successful working bng customs. it is a painful process. cutting the mechanism out of the head and neck. making sure the tail still works. gluing back together and loose or broken pieces.
