Pony Restorations--Before and After
« on: January 10, 2014, 01:27:45 PM »
Edit:  Feel free to add your own photos!

----------------------------

These are a couple of my favourite restorations.  When I got these ponies I had a sad little camera that was notorious for taking blurred pictures.  They actually look better in the before pictures than they really were!  The after pictures are taken with a much better camera.

I'll start with the G3 Styling Rarity:

Her hair was seriously dreadlocked, especially her mane.  I wasn't even sure if the frizz would be salvageable.  She needs a few other things, but I'm not ready to do touch-up paint yet.  *coughs*

After a very tedious brushing, a wash and an overnight conditioning, along with a second brushing and a slight bit of styling, she turned into this:

And now for Dancing Butterflies:

This was a very sad little pony that I found in a toy resale store.  She needed so much help that I left her there on the first visit.  I couldn't get her out of my head, though, and kept thinking about how much prettier I could make her.  Or, at least, I couldn't possibly make her worse!  So, I brought her home.  Her hair was horribly tangled, frizzed, and dry.  She had pretty serious tail rust.  She rattled!  And her legs needed a bit of repositioning.  She was the first pony whose head I have ever removed and inside she was coated with ick.  Her tail is still a little stained from the rust, but the actual rust is gone.  Some day, I may work on it some more or try a hydrogen peroxide bath.  But for now, here she is all cleaned up and prettified:

Always amazes me what a good clean and hair-conditioning can do, Clare has revived a few slightly neglected ponies with a good spa session :).

Excellent work on those two

They look amazing, great job!

I have seen so much grossness inside G1's, but it feels great to get them all cleaned out and pretty again, doesn't it? :)

Thank you, guys.

Yes, cleaning and prettifying ponies is probably my favourite thing about collecting them, now.  The more help they need, the more fun they are.  I love coaxing their natural beauty out from under all the dirt and tangles, etc.

So lovely! Cleaning them up is my favorite part, too.  I basically sell ponies to keep up my buy and clean habit  :P

I've often wondered why we don't have a restoration thread?  It's like those before and after shows- pony makeovers!  The styling g3's especially always show up in such rough condition, and yours looks so pretty now.

I love cleaning ponies, I often buy non-collector lots that have been with children and clean them up. It's one of my favourite ways to collect, restoring them and bringing them into the collecting community.

Well, shucks!  I totally don't mind if anyone else wants to post before/after restoration photos here, or ever just after photos with descriptions of what the pony was like before.  Restoration is fast becoming a passion with me, so bring it on!!!

I haven't taken many pics of my restorations (I always forget to take a "before" pic, lol), but there are a couple I can share. ^-^

I found this Bright Eyes with both symbols completely worn off, and no tail (I had already started repainting her symbol before I remembered to take this "before pic"):

And all done with a donor tail:

And then there was my Munchy, I found her this way at a fleamarket many many years ago:

She just needed some new hair:

These are just a few of my favorites. You can see all the ones I've done so far on my thread (link in my sig). One of my new favorite hobbies is Pony Spa Day!  I particularly like getting grubby ponies white again!

One day I'm gonna redo her symbol - still working on my painting skills:
