Peru Medley - Can this be fixed?
« on: October 19, 2013, 01:47:19 AM »
Aside from her mane and tail (and a CRACK near her tail hole), she's in beautiful condition.  I've given her a few good soaks in conditioner, and it just scrunches right back into this spongey mass of hair.  It's not knotted, it's quite soft, and a comb slides right through it when it's got conditioner in it, but it's just like a steel wool pad.

I have one like that too, so I'd appreciate some help as well.

Yikes! Is it bad that I kinda think her mane looks cute like that? XD She looks like she's rocking a sort of perfume puff look. I hope you can get help, though, I bet it is annoying.

Her mane isn't nearly as bad as the tail.  It's annoying because it's not perfume puff, and it's not smooth curls.  It's like a Nylon poodle afro.

Yes it can be tamed a lot more than that - it take a long time and a lot of care though.

You have to use straighteners but be VERY VERY careful to keep the hair wet and not to let it get too hot or it WILL melt!! Also use a conditioner solution to keep the hair wet.

It looks like it won't get completely silky, but it should improve a great deal - I've had quite a few Peruvians like that ;)

I don't know anything about Nirvanas so someone else should verify but how about fabric softener?
I used some on my Tux that had frizzed hair and it seemed to help. I just let his hair soak awhile then rinsed it out. Alternated between that and conditioner a few times.
I also used a flat iron but again I don't know what that would do to Nirvana hair.

Can you use a straightener on their hair? I know some countries and colors do not do well with that. I have never dealt with a Peruvian but I have had to do that with a couple of my No Country boys. (One of them had a tail so poofy he didn't fit on the shelf...)

I have a Peru Bowtie (unicorn) that had a similarly frizzed tail. I was able to get it looking better (although not perfect) with a straightening iron. I recommend doing very small sections at a time, wet with conditioner. The smaller the sections you work with, the better your results will be.

Here's my Peru Bowtie "after". Unfortunately I don't have a "before" pic, but her tail looked just like your Medley's tail.

So, here she is after a trip to the spa.  Her tail ended up gaining at least 2" worth of length after all was said and done.  I also discovered that she either had half of her tail trimmed, or it was installed really unevenly, since about half her tail is almost an inch shorter than the other half.  The shorter half is also much frizzier than the other.

And once she was all dry, with the rest of the Medley family...

Awesome! Glad she is no longer so Brillo-pad-esque. ;) I think the Peru ponies that originally had tight, tiny curls tend to have longer hair when it's fully flattened.

She looks so much better :)

I think it's normal for some peru ponies to have uneven tails, a bit like the Italians. I know my Peru Starshine has a uneven tail :)

Kkv is right, she would have had super curly hair when she was new.
