Silica Packets for Pony Storage - Help Please
« on: October 19, 2013, 01:35:06 AM »
As the title says I am putting away ponies for storage in plastic bins, I typically put silica pack that you find in items like purses taped to the lids of the boxes but I don't have any more.

Where do you purchase Silica packs? (Store, ebay, amazon, etc)

Is there a good or bad brand?

How often do you change out your packs?

Do you use something else instead to combat moisture?

Please discuss and help me figure out what I should do. Thanks!! :D

I bought mine from Amazon, they were reasonably priced.
Silica gel packets work until they are full of moisture. They can be dried out in the oven and reused, but I shouldn't imagine you will be storing your ponies long enough to need to change them?

U-line is a shipping supply company (I'm a huge dork and get the catalog just because I have a 'thing' for that kind of stuff LOL), and they have them. Of course, the smallest package you can buy is 6,000 packets, so....maybe Amazon.

That is good to know. :D I won't be storing them for that long but I do have ones that have been stored for a few years with them that might need to be dried out. The only way to tell if they need to be replaced is if they are moist? :P

I forgot about U-line, thank you CoonhoundBetty. I'll check to see if they do smaller shipments. I probably only need 20 at most lol. Maybe my company already has some.:P

I initially purchased some ages ago from Amazon but did find them cheaper at a local removal/storage company. I think it depends on the packs and the size of them as to how long they last; the environment they are stored in is also going to be a major factor.

I still use small silica packs for the small boxes of accessories but at work I need to store some electrical equipment in cold external environments and I use moisture absorbers which come with a chalk base. They are good for keeping water out of the air in a larger but sealed space.

Damp rid works wonders if you are going to be storing someplace with dampness or high humidity.  Sadly they discontinued the unscented and new scent is a bit strong.  I snag the packets from work when unpacking things and we use em with the ponies and daughters MH gals.  You could probably find a similar product at say a Bed Bath and Beyond in the closet area.

There are silica packets with a color indicator so you know when you need new ones.

I usually just throw a couple of extra new ones in every time I re-pack just in case.
