As for not using the program, I really like how my site looks on the program, but I am assuming things will get messy if I actually try to upload it?

You can just save it as a html file, and open it with whatever browser you use. It doesn't have to be uploaded anywhere, it can just be on your computer for you to view it. It's also good to check multiple browsers to see if your site displays correctly-- since not everyone uses the same sort of browser.

And another general note, it's also good to keep in mind some people browse on little ipads, and some people browse on huge monitors.

I taught myself html with just notepad and some random webpage. It was very useful to just do the code myself, and learn it. When I ended up taking a class for it -- I saw so many people just rely on the program that they didn't even learn anything. Not that it is bad to use programs, but it's good to just have an understanding of the basics.

I also recommend word press.
Yep. My site is intentionally extremely simple, as in just a background, pictures, text in a centered layout. Just like the old angelfire sites. I think it'd read extremely well on a mobile phone. I'm getting an Iphone so I can also experiment with how it looks in that's browser.

I've messed around with html in notepad too.

EditPad is a good program to use for HTML. It's a free opensource "beefed" up version of Notepad.
this program looks like a good upgrade to notepad.

Some good advice from banditpony there. :)

As regards messiness, not necessarily, but if it does, there may be little you can do about the problem if you don't know HTML because you will have limited control over the actual implementation. What I originally meant is that the code itself may be an awful muddle. WYSIWYG programs used to be notorious for producing unstandard HTML (for instance, not closing their <p> and <img> tags) and adding "empty" code that does not produce anything visible (like useless <span> tags or lines and lines of meta information). All of this makes the code difficult to handle, even for machines. As a matter of fact, a substantial amount of browser program code exists to patch up nonstandard HTML that they may interpret in different ways. The situation is a lot better than it used to be, but back in the day IE used to have its own (now luckily defunct) CSS gimmicks like transparent elements that would not work in any other browser. Again I'm anything but up to date on the latest developments, but the only way to evaluate code written by others is to learn some by yourself...
