New Game!

Recommend a book for the person who posts below you and why you would recommend!

I am going to recommend:

A short history of nearly everything!

I have read this 10-12 times, and I love it.

Thirst by Christopher Pike, very well written, amazing series and I've read it at least 3-4 times now.

John Dies At The End by David Wong

Its a sci-fi horror comedy, which is weird and amazing. There's some crazy stuff in here with a mix of jokes (a little immature, but they're 25 year old men) that keeps you engaged without ruining anything.
There's a movie too, but the book is better.

Is this recommendation for me?  We have this, and I totally agree that it's fantastic!  (I got it for my son, who loves chemistry, but I just love how it's written.) ^.^

I shall recommend... The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss.  Yeah, it's high fantasy, and book one in a trilogy (how original)... but it's utterly mesmerizing.  I've read a lot of fantasy, and I don't think I've read anything quite as un-put-down-able as this.  The second book, The Wise Man's Fear, is even better.  I have high hopes for the culmination of the story of Kvothe the Bloodless. :lookround:

Wishlist - I'm back on (semi-) active buying again... can't buy everything on my wish list all at once (yay, back-to-school and tuition fees), but I am still looking to plump up my collection a bit more: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,380638.0.html

Oooh, I want to read Poe someday :) (and a Bunnicula book I saw called "Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allen Crow" :) )

I'm going to recommend Watership Down. I've probably read this no less than a dozen times and love it each time. It is not a child's fluffy little bunny story, it is deep and dark in parts, and wonderful overall. And a huge insight into the world of rabbits.

I recommend Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. (And it's three sequels.) It's an amazing look into the politics, religion, and societies of Oz, and gave me a whole new view of the wicked witch. The Wicked Years is my favorite series.

(And I love Watership Down!)

"Carved In Bone" by Jefferson Bass. My hook into this book (and series) admittedly is the real life body farm. Plus a real case, that you may or may not have read about (or seen on the TV).

Not for the faint of heart (or stomach). It is a full throttle, first hand ride. Through the twists and turns of forensic anthropology. With a hefty dose of southern charm and style.

I'm not much of a reader, but I read The Hobbit and it was great!

EDIT: Never mind, I thought this was recommending a book in general, instead of the above poster.

Roadside Picnic by  Arkady Strugatsky

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/331256.Roadside_Picnic

Not long but it's thought provoking and it's great sci-fi!
It inspired Stalker the movie and S.T.A.L.K.E.R the game but it's so much better than either.

Far From The Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity by Andrew Solomon.

This is a huge, intimidating read at first glance, but the levels of understanding the author puts into every facet of this work is nothing short of powerful.  As the title states, it's about parents whose children do not share a horizontal identity (such as parents who have disabled children, or children who have committed terrible crimes, or transgendered children, or children with mental illness, etc.)  The experiences are different but the fundamental quest for understanding is the same.  Very thought-provoking read.

For fiction I'd recommend:
The Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko.

The books are wonderful and beautifully translated from the Russian. It has a few Russian concepts to get your head around but I loved every second of these books!
