ID these vintage/antique dolls?
« on: August 17, 2013, 09:03:37 AM »
I wasn't sure if this went in Dollhouse or Off-Topic; sorry if I've misplaced it. Anyway, I came across these two dolls while cleaning out my grandma's attic, and was wondering if anybody might know anything about them.

Spoiler'd for size

They're about eight inches tall. They're hollow and made of some sort of plastic. Their heads and arms are moveable; they seem to be strung together. The Indian girl has sleep eyes that close when she's laid down. The guy (who I've dubbed "Creepy Dude"  :P) has open/close eyes too, but you have to move them with your fingers rather than having them close automatically. The clothes aren't removable. I don't see any markings on them at all.n

Grandma says she remembers picking out the Indian girl at a gift shop in the mid '50s, and Creepy Dude was given to her secondhand by a cousin so she's not sure if his origins. She thinks he might be a character but can't place who he his.

That girl looks so familiar, I can't quite place it though.

hello
I have the Indian girl :) several of her in different types of costume actually. Shes  classed as a "costume doll", they were dressed in different national costumes with the same doll body/face and very popular in the 50s - it was a hobby. I inherited my great Aunt's collection :)

I dont know about your boy though! I would hazard a guess that hes a costume doll too that has been re-dressed, but that would be just a random guess ;)

Interesting finds!
x

I think these dolls were also sold in craft stores nude to make outfits for; I have several girls MIP (produced later than the 50's though) and have seen patterns for them. There's a vintage pattern for a bride and groom's crocheted outfits and Creepy Dude is the groom:

Thanks but more dumb luck than anything:) It was actually more I IDed the tux, if he'd been wearing a different outfit I don't know if I would've remembered!

I didn't know the girls were costume dolls as well,  these girls are definitely versatile :)
