Go to Backgrounds (either via your page or your equine's page) and click "free", then chose a background by clicking it once, then click save.

Yes, TPN, trinkets come in either the prize boxes you get (I recommend opening them via the "Mine" button to see what you have before giving to an equine) or by purchasing from the trinket shop, via the "Explore" link above each page.
