CG's Curls for your pony:) Pick Heavy
« on: July 24, 2013, 12:08:54 PM »
I have been reading that other ponies have not been having success with curls. So I thought I will show you how I do mine:)

This Ringlet was done with this method by me about 4 to 6 months ago.

This is here curls now....yup still going strong:)

This is Streaky(I think I have the right name) Curls are still some what there.
I can be destructive at this part with a pony but I wash her in soap and water. I will use Shampoo sometimes too. After washing out the soap I put in the conditioner. This is the terrible part. I comb/brush the hair free of tangles!!!! >_< Sorry if you cringe.

So I have my wet clean pony ready to go with all the pieces that I need. Now I have not washed out the conditioner in the ponies hair. You may want to add more. *Sorry for the feet picture. I do clean a pony after my feet have been on her*

I made sure to separate the hair colors. Made sure they were coated in conditioner.

At this point I am trying to find the curvature of her natural curls. You can see even with a comb out there is still curl in the hair.

I warp the curl's end around a straw. I warp the paper towel around it and let the other hair wind around the paper towel until I have the curl on top of her head. Sometimes I need a rubber band to secure the ends.

I used tiny hair clips to keep curls tight to the head as possible. Now she still has conditioner in her hair. I leave it in about a week. You can do shorter or longer.

After your desired time period, its time to wash her. All I do is wash out the conditioner but leave the straws, clips, paper towels in. You might have to re-adjust them after you are done. I let her dry for a few more days. Rinse one more time. This is to make sure you have the conditioner out of the pony hair. Let her dry for a few more days. I have been known to spray the curls with a spray bottle of water. Let them dry. After you are done giving them a good dry take off the clips. I pull the paper towel of and slide the straw out.

There she is. I do not think those curls will go any where. I would say it takes me about a few weeks to a month to do this. I am sure if I had more time to clean and curl my ponies it would not be sooooo long.

I hope this helps:)

Thanks so much for sharing this, CG!

I saw the dating game pics and wondered if you had boiled Ringlet for her beautiful curls. I like this method as it seems like there is more nourishment going on and a kinder margin for error.

Thanks again!  :)

Oh, CG, what do you think of actual curlers for pony hair?

I have used actual curlers before. I only have 3. I have the ones that have a strap that hold them...I always get a kink with those. I think they work just as great as straws as long as you know how to use them. I would use them with a paper towel though:)

I used them with my Buzzer (cause her hair is curly too) and while the curl came out really nice... it fell out really easy. (She inherited my hair!!)

That is what kind of curlers I have too, but I have a bunch of them in all different sizes, lol.  I'll definitely do Ringlets with straws, since her curls are tighter.

I have found a way to make loose and tight curls no matter the size. For Thicker and shorter curls continue to wrap the hair around itself. I Did that this Ringlet. For Streaky I made sure the hair was only wrapped around the straw.
