Plasticizer breakdown on glitter ponies? (G2 and G3)
« on: June 26, 2013, 06:16:56 PM »
Here I go again, bothering you all with another thread
I'm fairly new to understanding plasticizer breakdown. Cancer, pindot ect I've known about for years, but I hadn't heard of this one until recently.
I have two ponies (G2 Queen Sunsparkle and G3 Secret Wish) who are both sticky to hold. I assume this is plasticizer breakdown? :( Is this common in glitter ponies? None of the others in my collection have gone like this (except an FF Cotton Candy I got in a lot recently), just two out of the three glitter ponies I have (the third being G1 Twinkler, who is thankfully absolutely fine).
So if it is plasticizer breakdown, should I remove them from my shelf? As I've just read that it is contagious  I've only had Sunsparkle a couple of weeks, but Secret Wish has been on my shelf with other ponies for years. I haven't picked her up for ages, so I don't know how long she's been like that...

I believe it is quite common in the G2 and G3 glitter ponies.  I might be wrong, but I don't think it's more common in the G1 glitter ponies than other G1 ponies.

I'm not convinced that it does spread pony to pony, but personally I wouldn't have them touching other ponies or anything else plastic.  It will cause damage to other types of plastics, so I wouldn't want to risk a playset for example.

Oh wow - this is kind of new to me too. Never had a plastic breakdown on my G1s, and isn't it a bit early for G3s to start to break down? I mean, aren't they pretty recent in the whole MLP universe... That really surprises me to hear about!

My G3 glitters are still the same as when they came out of their packaging, so it's not all that are breaking down. :( It might be an environmental factor...do you live in a place with high heat and/or high humidity?

I cant say I have ever heard of anyone saying its contagious to be honest. The concept of plasticiser breaking down is no different from the concept of cancer - its to do with the integrity of the plastic of that item.

Plasticisers are added in order to make ponies easily moulded and obviously so ponies can be used as a weapon due to the solid plastic :P The plasticiser/chemicals/plastic simply start to break down and leak out of the plastic.

Although it can affect any pony, it does seems to be very common in translucent ponies - I would guess that is to do with the different types of plastic used in order to manufacture a pony in this way.

While, it would be safe for a pony with this to live beside another without it. I personally would keep them separate - not because of contagion of course - but because they can get sticky and leak some pigment colour along with the plasticiser and you don't want to stain another pony.

I actually kinda want some G3 sparkle ponies where the glitter has broken down and disappeared- they look like gummies!
