Looking for estimates to repair/ replace a custom
« on: May 23, 2013, 07:05:33 AM »
Hi, everyone

This custom was made for me several years ago. However she has some issues that need to be fixed. Her main issue is that her sealer failed and even years later she's very sticky and sticks to everything.  Even her hair sticks to her body. Over time it has just gotten worse instead of better. The other day I found a small piece of paint nearby that had come off of her. Can she be fixed or would someone have to make a completely new custom? I'm only looking for estimates at this time.

These are pictures I took of her when I first got her.

All information appreciated. :)

Have you tried to get a can of Dullcote or a bottle of Mod Podge and give her a new sealant coat?  Sometimes that can help the stickiness issues, and it would be a lot cheaper than trying to send her to someone to fix (and avoid potentially damaging her more in transit!)

Mod Podge can be sticky- so I'd try Dullcote first...

What a cutie!  Have you contacted the artist (if possible)?

For a self-fix, You could cover the hair and feather for protection.  Gently wipe your girl down with a damp cloth to remove as much of the dust stuck to her as possible (spot test on a hoof first).   Testor's Dullcote is a matte finish spray sealant that is wonderful.  It's about $5ish for a small can and can be bought online or at a craft store.  The can requires a good shake and good ventilation.  It dries fairly quickly, and two coats should do the trick.  It can drip if sprayed too closely or too thickly.

Hope this helps!

So it would be better to try to fix her myself instead of asking someone else to fix her? I haven't done anything to her except try to keep her from sticking to things (putting her on a tissue, but then the tissue stuck to her) Another person tried to get use water to get some of the dust/whatever sticks to her off but it took off her paint in a few places.

I would try fixing her youself with testors dullcoat first b/c she could get even more messed up, sticking to the stuff you package her in to mail her to someone.
