I believe that is was confirmed at the New York Toy Fair Investor Event this year. John A. Frascotti, Global Chief Marketing Officer from Hasbro announced that they would reveal the name of their new IP at the San Diego Comic Con at a "Pink Carpet" event.

This was all before when we hardly knew anything about Equestria Girls though.

He also mentioned that there will be a New IP for My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. This new IP is for Older Girls; Teenage and above. The name of the IP will be revealed at a special “Pink Carpet Event” at San Diego Comic Con 2013. My best guess is that this is the rumored “Equestria Girls” trademark."

I remember when the Beast Machines Transformers cartoon started in September, the toys themselves didn't launch until January (after Christmas).  It's a bit of a strange choice, but not unheard of, for a company to want to build some excitement prior to the launch of the toys.

I think that is the reason we haven't found leaks on Taobao or other Chinese site.

As for Merch, I know for a fact that it will be out there soon. ;p I think they wanted to keep it under wraps until the actual movie trailer dropped mixed in with a combination of the timing of the finalized character designs and product production time.

I don't even think I want the dolls, but I really want to SEE them.  I'm going to the big Family Day premiere event in LA, and they're going to have five of their toy franchises represented there (including a photobooth and someplace where families can "ponyfy" themselves to look like the Equestria Girls characters.  So maybe they will have some pictures or prototypes there.

Yes please! if you cant, someone else surley will and post em all over the internet lolol. I keep trying to decide if I want to but the dolls or not. I just really want to see them right now at this point! Just a picture, even if its a prototype! T_T

I'm getting impatient too. I want to know what they look like so bad! I just hope they don' t look too Barbie-ish and they give them unique body moulds. Would be neat if they come with stands too.

I think thats a possibility too - after all if its something which is not a pony...it may not be listed as "MLP" after all.

And yes Hasbro had Maxie back in the 80s/90s as well - they spent a lot of time and effort and energy in that line.
