My only concern is someone using these for display purposes. What if the paint comes off or soaks into the pony feet? I know we have that concern with stained shelving...

Maybe the displayer could add a layer of plastic wrap to the bottom part before putting ponies on it for long durations?

The paint I am using is acrylic.  It isn't particularly known for bleeding.  I probably wouldn't leave the same pony on it for years at a time or out in the heat for an extended period.  But I would say that the danger is no greater than leaving them on a piece of cloth or felt.  In fact, the item that I use for a palette is a blue plastic lid (yes, high-end, I know) and when the paint gets thick enough, I can just peel it up in a big sheet.  I've used it for this purpose since college over ten years ago.  I've never noticed any bleeding to the original plastic.

I won't say that it is impossible for the paint to bleed, but I don't think that it is particularly likely.

Of course, you could use saran wrap or something similar over it if you want to be extra cautious and intend to leave the ponies there for a long time.  Or you could hang the backdrop straight against the wall and not actually put the ponies on top of it.  There is enough room at the bottom that you could probably fit a set of risers in front and still have enough room at the top for a pretty background scene.
