Watercolor Sea Pony hair?
« on: May 02, 2013, 01:38:39 PM »
There's a conversation I have going on with some Tumblr friends concerning Watercolor hair... so I thought I'd ask the Pony gurus here!  :)

We were all kind of wondering what the materials are that make up their hair. I actually have yet to own one of these so I can't say I've ever touched one before, but they are supposed to feel like cotton? It certainly isn't regular nylon hair. (One of these friends is from Germany and the other I'm not sure... so were there international differences?)

Also, what was the technology that made it change colors? Same with the body changing- I think that's a really cool idea for a toy and I'm really curious!

I agree with Goldilocks its not the normal nylon - it is possibly SaranTC or something similar as that tends to be the industry standard for thermochromatic hair.

However, their hair wasn't "stringy" or "cottony" per se at the start - it was no different than if you purchased colour changing hair from a hair seller right now, nice brushable hair [perhaps a little more oily in texture]. But because [similar to the other UV sensitive hair on some ponies] in order to react to heat, over time or with over exposure it simply breaks down and becomes either stringy or cottony. The liquid crystals or leuco dyes used dont last forever. Them breaking down damages the hair itself hence the stringy/cottony effect.

Here is a picture of a pony with her hair "pre" breakdown - you can see it is not stringy but neither is it as smooth as other pony hair.

yeah these things have weird hair.

i have one her hair is in terrable condition and has  really   fluffed out,
i cant comb it or too much of the fibers break off .

is it ok to re-root these girls?   or are they better left original ?

Hello Tumblr friend!

I would personally try rehairing them if they are not in mint condition. It will look better, and if it will make you feel better with your Ponies.  :)

I think whether you rehair them or not is a personal decision of course.

The one thing I would say is that the vast majority of them have hair issues and so in theory hair problems does not dramatically devalue them. Therefore, if you re hair you are going to devalue the pony in some way as it is no longer "original". However, watercolour babies really dont hold a high value so its not as though you would be loosing out on lots of $$$ :P

Huh! Thanks cat this was very informative, I wondered about it myself. The two I own are in various states of degraded plastic and hair unfortunately. They look like they're rooted with yarn giving them kind of a dreadlocky look  The hair is super soft and nice to touch though, for what thats worth XD
