DH Virgin Snow Dyeing Probs (with pic)
« on: May 02, 2013, 10:47:11 AM »
Hi loves!  So recently I was commissioned for two hanks of lovely rainbow hair.  I grabbed my supplies and got to work.

Stats:
3 fresh bags of DH Virgin Snow
8 colors of Rit dye (some liquid, some powder)
Vinegar
Shampoo
Boiling Water
Conditioner (at the end)

As I went about my first round of dyeing, which entails a regular dip followed by a dip with vinegar in the chosen color to lock in the color, I noticed something odd.  Some strands were not taking dye!  I carefully shampooed the hanks between colors to remove extra dye and any residue on the hair from manufacturing (as usual).  I rolled up my sleeves ("I'll fix em!") and redid it all, even trying a few different varieties (two different reds, two different blues) to see if that would take better.  Nada.  So after having dipped each section 4 times total in boiling dye bath....I'm at a loss.  3/4 of the hank is beautiful rainbow, and about 1/4 of each hank in solid white, though every color (almost like it is saran or something!)

I will post pics tonight....

Anyone else experience this?  Is this a blend now?

I plan on emailing Tina soon as well.

That is super strange. If it's all nylon then it should all dye - the only thing I can think of is what you suggested, that there must be another hair type blended in there. How peculiar.

are you going to complain to DH and demand some money back? (I would be super angry)

I thought her nylon hair felt different in different colors. I have Virgin Snow (which separates all by its self), Lapis Sapphire, Atomic Turquoise, and Firebird which doesn't feel like the other 3. They feel nothing like Hasbro hair either the first 3 are to oily and Firebird is to rough..I thought maybe a really good hard brushing like a kid would fluff them up make them softer less oily but it doesn't. It may be the same color but I'm not convinced it is the same stuff. I would image that Hasbro has an actual patent on the hair nylon # but not the colors.

I'm frustrated but not angry.  As much as I'd love a solid answer, I will be surprised if even Tina knows for certain.  Blending two varieties of hair in one hank is more time consuming than just one, so I seriously doubt she did it while packaging the hair.  But who knows?  I'll still ask.

Tina has been really good to me and with all the free hair given out lately I don't plan on asking for more.  I will just purchase a few more hanks if I can't learn anything specific here or via email.

ETA: Hasbro buys there hair from the same supplier DH does and it has been confirmed.  They don't own the patents on the hair, I imagine the hair supplier would.  <3

Some colors are more oily than others, but that doesn't affect dying, a good wash will get the oiliness out.

CSA - I'll dye some hair tonight, I'll see if my VS behaves the same as yours.

I've dyed virgin snow before with no problems.  This seems very odd.  While different colors of nylon seem to vary in their textures (the more matte colors seem less silky), this seems like a very odd variation.

Hmm. Interesting.

I think I've only ever dyed Starlight and didn't have any problems, but then I have not ordered from DH since she got the new colors in. Everything I have is older stuff.

That's really weird... I've dyed Virgin Snow before with no problems, but I wonder if the newer hanks are different? Hmm... I just got a newer hank of it, maybe I'll try dying it too.

Please forgive the cell phone pic with crap lighting, I can NOT find my camera charger.  But it's enough to get the gist.

It might just be me and I'm sorry you were having dye issues but that white in there looks beautiful!

Moreso on topic... I haven't dyed any VS for well over a year. If anything I'd say the manufacturer did something in the creation process with a synthetic blend or something. That's odd.

it does look beautiful, I'm sure we can all agree, but whether it looks good isn't the issue here. The issue is that the hair is acting unreliably and not taking dye properly. There's clearly something wrong with it. I hope Tina can get you some answers!

 I appreciate everyone who thinks it looks cool <3 I'm just frustrated that it's not what I was commissioned for.  I have also emailed Tina.  Thanks for any input! ^^
