Smelly pony help!
« on: April 21, 2013, 06:05:41 AM »
I just got 48 ponies & accessories from a Craigslist ad, I have cleaned them with oxyclean & 409 but they are still retaining a very stinky smell.  Any ideas on how to de-stink these ponies?  Any help would be great!  Thanks!

Not experienced this myself, but I have heard good results from others about putting the pony in a bag with some Bicarbonate of soda or kitty litter as an alternative.

What kind of stink?

Putting in a container with baking soda may help.
I generally just line the bottom with baking soda and then set them on a paper towel.

I quite often just leave them out in a well ventilated area and they start to smell better.

(Going to follow this thread if nopony objects :lookround: since my Lucky Leaf still smells kinda... vinegary?  Acrid?  Weird?  Though she's been sitting in an airy spot for a while...)

Fabric softener really works here. They smell after months still like it. And my whole cabinet does and it smells so good! <3

I can vouch for bi-carb, I even throw it in the wash when I buy vintage or 2nd hand clothing, it's a great thing to have in your house for smells and cleaning!

I'd probably just try airing them out first. Most non-collectors I have bought from usually had the ponies in a plastic trash bag/ old box and tucked in basements and attics. Maybe a chance to breathe might help?

I soaked a moldy/rusty filled pony in a dollar store oxy powder and hot water bath. Now she smells like orange-ish oxy clean. I soaked her in a hot water bath again ( just hot water to open her pores ) and she stinks a lot less now.

Airing them out, baking soda, the freezer, cat litter... they all work out pretty well and if the smell is REALLY bad you can do all four!
I personally do the kitty litter method, and mix in some baking soda as well and let them sit for a week like that. Then when you wash the litter dust off use a nice smelling shampoo or soap that will get locked in the hair and keep it smelling that way. Works every time!

I think you normally have to try a combination to get there sometimes. I will vouch for storing in a tupperware with baking soda then fresh air then back in the tupperware with fresh baking soda then fresh air...repeat as required method. Sometimes its a fast turnaround, sometimes it takes a while. But I would always recommend to give the pony a good time in with the baking powder - at least a week or more and then a few days in the fresh air before popping her back in again.

I recently tried the misting with very diluted fabric softener on a baity pony and it worked really well - no recurrence of the smell at all.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Thanks for all your ideas!  I'm trying baking soda now, I did soak a SS in oxyclean, that did help a little.  I think I'll try the kitty litter next maybe.  They were stored in a "cat" house and smell of that....
