Hair Advice Needed for Baby Sugarcake
« on: April 03, 2013, 03:05:16 PM »
Pony hair stylists and spa technicians, Baby Sugarcake needs your help!

I am super excited to own Baby Sugarcake again (I sold mine when I graduated from college and desperately needed money) and she is in overall really beautiful condition.  This little darling's hair, however, is a bit insane.  Please note that I'm not much of a stylist and have never done much of anything with pony hair before.  Should I leave her hair alone or try to do something with it?  Should I try to restore her curls and, it so, how should I go about doing it?

If I am honest and if she was mine, I would try to tease her hair back to normal. She looks like she has her original curl - and these girls did have really really curly hair. So rather than wash, brush and flat iron out those curls, I would work to try and restore some kind of curly normality. You may find that her hair still looks a little wild by the time you are finished but for me [personally speaking] thats preferable to have all those original curls to having newly made curls.

With a wide tooth metal comb, your fingers and patience you should be able to comb into separate curls and delicately brush those. If you wish to clean her hair, I find using a can of compressed air at the plugs and over the surface usually works to remove any dust without straightening.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

The best way to deal with her is to just give her to me!! :D

If you can't do that though you're left with two options..
How important is orignal curl to you?

You can wet her hair, put conditioner in it and brush with a comb (monster high ones are awesome for this due to the wide but sharp toothing!) and then rinse. Brushing while the hair is wet and starting at the bottom will ensure the strands won't stretch or break.
I bet she will retain a lot of curl, but you will loose a bit of it with conditioning. I still think she would look better with less frizzy hair and a more smooth curly look to a more curly and frizzy one.. but that is up to you!

You took the words straight out of my mouth!!!

I agree with everyone though.  Just gently comb her hair and do your best to preserve the curl.  You'll also preserve her value best that way.  Gorgeous pony!

Those girls certainly do have large curls! Hopefully her sister's curls will have a settled a bit by the time she gets to you. :)

I literally laughed out loud reading some of the posts on here!  You all are great!

Also, thanks so much for the hair-care advice!  I will try my hand at getting those curls back, although I think that I might wait for her sister to arrive (thank you himmie!!!!!!) so I can use her more tame curls as inspiration.   :)

What I've done in the past to restore natural curls is to use a very thick conditioner and brush it out, wash it out and air dry. Those curls handle alot, especially if you rinse under just luke warm water. Then you might be able to "follow" some of the curls and restore them using straws or whatever if necessary.

The conditioner has worked wonders on some curly ponies I've had in the past, recently a Truly, and a Fashion Star Filly :)

Is there a particular brand of conditioner that you'd recommend?  If I do use conditioner, I want to make sure I use a good, pony-friendly product.    :)

I like to use the types of conditioner that comes with home-dye kits for hair... for this particular type of stuff. It's super thick...

Otherwise I just use normal conditioner, V05, Suave, etc. Nothing's ever messed up a pony that I've used :)

Just giving this a little bump to ask how much to expect to pay for this little cutie :) She's one of my ultimate grails and I'd love to have her! :lovey: Not sure how much to pay, but I'm guess around $80-$100?

I think it depends a lot on condition, if the seller knows what they have or not, and what the buyers are willing to pay at the time.  (We all know things can get CrAzY on ebay in a hurry.)  I saw a price check from a while back that had her from $100 to $150.  My Sugarcake was in a lot of other ponies that I got for about $160.  I bought another Sugarcake in somewhat rough shape for $60.  I'd be interested to know what other people think is a fair price for her these days.   :)

I was watching that lot on eBay to see if anyone noticed miss Sugarcake in there. :) I thought it was a good price for a that lot with her in it.

I was pretty stoked to win it....I was so afraid there was going to be some ridiculous bidding war!  I've seen some people get absolute STEALS on some rare ponies when I look through the SOLD auctions, but I never seem to be that lucky.

I'm so glad that I was able to buy her sister from you without the ebay drama.   :)
