for sprinkles you could use something like these

they are teeny tiny little balls in lost of bright colors. just a thought.

Microbeads are great, but beads and sprinkles sink like crazy. I'm sure you could figure something out though!

Those microbeads might work for the round kind of sprinkles but for the flat kind I have read that spraying them with sealant beforehand keeps them from bleeding.
