New to the world of BJDs!
« on: March 31, 2013, 08:10:30 PM »
Hiya!
Ive been interested in BJDs for a while now, theyre so cute and i love the amount of customisation you can do! Im wondering if anyone can help me get started?
What would be a good starting doll? Ive found on ebay the Hujoo Yomi girl 24cm, i think she's pretty cute and could be a good toe in the water doll since she's pretty cheap. I also love the 12cm Hujoo girl, but thought the 24cm might be easier to start with. If i had the money id be buying a Fairyland doll, theyre soo adorable! :D
Also, any good tutorials for face-ups? Clothing? Hair Styling?
What else do i need to know? Im super excited to get started!

Thanks guys and gals!  ^.^

I'm not really much help as I'm super new to BJDs as well. I've found that Den of Angels is a great place to find out all you need to know. It's a site dedicated purely to BJDs. There are some that they consider off topic and aren't allowed on that site. But I'm pretty sure the ones you mentioned aren't part of that group.

I thought Hujoo was off topic on DOA due to the different plastic they were made out of? (ABS).

I still also recommend DOA as a great information source, as for Hujoo I think AsenvaBJD I think her name is has great Hujoo reviews on YouTube.

Ive actually found that my BJD grail is under $100, bobobie's Moony. Im thinking ill buy her as my first as i absoloutely adore her! I never actually thought id find her, or that she would be affordable, so im super happy! :D

Edit: Oh, i just had a look and it says registration is currently invite-only, has anyone got an invite i can use? :3

Idk if the hujoos can be called ball jointed dolls or not. Their body is a lot more sophisticated than your standard ball joint. If you go on junkyspot, someone has a video going over the hujoo action bodies.

If you want to save money, I'd post a bit on DOA so you can get marketplace access, that way you'd be able to find your grail doll for even less.

Wow, i didnt expect them to be more complicated than regular bjds, i thought they would be simpler. Still need to have a search for some videos.  :)

Yeah, im pretty excited to browse the marketplace and see whats out there, and to browse the photo galleries and look at what other people have done with their dolls! :D

I was so excited i actually already bought Moony, but now i want Sunny too. They will be the cutest twins!

Congrats on your first BJD! Watch out, they are addictive :)

Etsy is a great place to find cute clothes for good prices. It's so much fun to spoil your dolls, and Moony's size is great for finding in scale accessories to play with. Post pics when yours arrives!

My advice would be to save and buy the one doll you really want.  ^.^
My first doll was $200 ( now out of production )  Wishel doll. I loved her to bits.

If you haven't joined ABJD forums, I would suggest you join because they have a lot more info and resources available for you in this doll hobby. Den of Angels is the largest/active English forum but not the only one. Also, there are tons of Flickr groups too.

DoA is nice, but I usually just go there for market place access though. Much nicer photos of dolls on FLickr if you ask me  ^.^

Castaways is another forum I recently joined and it's pretty nice there.
Den of Demons is best to lurk. Lurk hard. Lurk some more.
Resinality is not very active, but still a good resource as far as Y!J links to abjd stuff.

Renee_chan: Thankyou, i shall definitely have a search on etsy!
I will also most definitely share pictures when she arrives! Aaahh, so excited! :D

Like A Tea Spoon: Yeah, i will have to do a lot of saving! I already have about 3 dolls on my wishlist after Moony! xD
Ooh, thankyou for pointing me in the right direction! Ill check out those forums too for sure. Ill have to have a look on Flickr too, i'd love to see what other people have done with their Moonys! :D
What is den of demons, is it like the opposite of doa?
Also, i dont know what Y!J is. Its probably obvious but i cant put my finger on it.  ^.^

Den of Demons is a wank forum. People on there post pics of dolls they find, shall we say, unattractive or funny. But it's also a good source to find out who the good & bad traders are, I guess. If you sign up for DoD you'll need a thick skin. For info, Den of Angels is a much better & bigger source.

I say Den of Demons as that forum has lots of information about bad sellers in their marketplace. While Den of Angels bans without really giving too much detail, you can usually find out what when down through Den of Demons. Their bad sellers list is a LOT more detailed than DoA.

DoD's "critic" forum is also very helpful as long as you are willing to accept the criticism. I learned a lot about how to take better pictures and paint better because they don't sugar coat it and let you know how to improve.

I wouldn't say they are the opposite of Den of Angels, but  def. lurk before posting to get the feel of the form. I've been a member since 2006 and I mostly just lurk.
