What other languages do you speak?
« on: March 30, 2013, 03:53:40 PM »
I'm always impressed by people who can speak more than one language :good: And my quest to learn Japanese has got me curious now, what languages do you speak? :awake:

I'm ok at Japanese (getting better! I still can't read much kanji) but I'm getting tutorial audiobooks and such from my local library and it's helping out quite a bit. I can understand more than I can speak, if that makes sense ;) I found that I really like the 'Pimsleur method' when it comes to audiobooks, since it quizzes forces you to use the language you're learning to answer questions, instead of just memorizing and repeating words.

I also know a tiny bit of Spanish, but it's rather shaky since it's been a few years since I've studied it, and I only remember a couple German words from the half semester of German I took in Middle School :silly:

So how about you? :) If you don't speak any other languages, are there any you'd like to learn one day?

I know a bit of French - I can read it much better than speak though.

But my husband is fluent in Haitian Creole.

I speak Finnish of course  :P

I think I speak and write English pretty good. In Finland we start to study English in the 3rd grade (9y).
I read books in English and write and read it in the internet every day.

Then we have our second language Swedish. You are forced to study it during high school (13y-14y). Many people hate it here but I kinda liked it mostly because my foster parents had lived there. I read and hear it pretty well but I'm too shy to talk. Because I can read Swedish I understnd a little bit Danish and Norwegian :)

Then I studied Germany a little while but I remember only some sentences :(

I also studied Russian a little while, too bad there wasn't a chance to continue :(

I think I could learn  new language pretty fast, but then again I really suck at maths even though I work as a a sales person   :P

I know French very well, can speak Indonesian quite well, and also know some Japanese and Spanish.

Quite proud of them all because Americans are largely unilingual for the most part.:)

I took a year of Japanese in college. I seriously wanted to pursue it but everyone discouraged me from it. I wish I hadn't listened. :/

Spanish was technically my first language, until I moved in with my English-speaking grandparents. I easily understand and read Spanish, not just literal translations either. I am definitely not comfortable speaking it though, my grammar is horrid. I have taken a lot of trips to Costa Rica and Guatemala over the years so I have to keep up with it a bit. My mother speaks Spanish fluently, even though she is my white half. She is a Spanish translator and interpreter.

Uhh, I can count in German. ;)

It's so true! :drunk: This is probably why I'm rather 'in awe' of people who are multilingual :silly: I seriously wish the schools I had gone to had more and earlier options for language classes. For the schools I went to, they offered us 'Exploratory Spanish' and 'Exploratory German' in 7th grade and those were only 1/2 semester classes, and that was the earliest.

Fluency in Japanese is my main goal right now, but I'd like to learn Russian someday, possibly Italian too :)

Swedish, English and a little bit of German. Swedish is similar to Danish and Norwegian, so I understand these languages quite well too.

Yeah, they're pretty similar. After I picked up Swedish, Norwegian seemed familiar, it's still different, but if someone were to start speaking Norwegian to me, I wouldn't be lost. Danish, though, is a mystery to me. I can pick up about a third of the words, the other third are words that sound the same but have a different meaning, and a third is completely foreign to me. I do not understand it.

I'm thinking about learning Finnish so I can follow SM-Liiga games. That's the highest tier of hockey in Finland.

I do know quite a bit of Spanish; if I were to go to a Spanish-speaking country, I would be okay. ;) But I am far from fluent.

I also know tidbits of German, French, sign language, and Latin (though it's a dead language).

I hate the word speak because more often then not I prefer not to speak in foreign languages - just feel like I am butchering.. but despite my insecurities I am fluent in:

-German
-Slovenian (And Croatian - similar enough that I understand and can have a conversation in)
-Gaelic
-French
-English :P

Can understand, but not really hold a conversation:

-Spanish
-Russian
