Adding Blush to a doll?
« on: March 29, 2013, 08:57:05 AM »
Can you guys help me? I've seen this beautiful doll, and the only difference between the owner's doll and the stock doll is a lip colour change [I can do] and adding blush. I have no idea how to add blush to create this effect. I've messaged the owner on flickr, but I also wanted to ask the experts. How do you create this look??

When I blush dolls or ponies, I use high quality chalk pastels and apply it with a small brush or q-tip blending/feathering it around the edges. I would suggest protecting the eyes and spraying some testor's dullcote before applying so that it will not permanently stain the vinyl and of course sealing it with the same thing afterwards to set it.

I second that. But, I did not know how to get it soft enough when I started. Use a knife to scrape some off the stick to make a fine powder.

Yep a knife or you can rub a tiny piece of sandpaper with the chalk as well, I forgot to mention that important thing.

Yip! Chalk pastes are awesome! (Rembrandt & Derwent are good brands) I've also used high pigment pencil lead rubbed against sandpaper, and then using a brush or q-tip to apply it. -- Also tried using watered down acrylics which was/is used on lots of Barbie tuts.  ^.^

I can't seem to get a good picture of mine, but I tried it out today. I had a problem, because the spray sealer I used was glossy, and so when I sprayed only what I had painted, she had this glossy bib/beard look. I had to remove the sealer, thereby removing the pastels, and try again with something else.

Here she is....

The blush doesn't photograph well, but there is a little more coloration than the picture shows. What do you think??

P.S. She has terribly wonky eyes that I didn't notice until I started messing with her
