I dunno but the age group they are aimed at seem to like em.  They are aimed to attract attention, not win awards.  Remember they are a toy meant to be opened and the box thrown out.  So not always as much time or effort went into them as say a poster for sale at an event.

I happen to love G1, G2 and G3 art work, in fact on some ponies I like the art better then the ponies.  As to G4, do not really look at it much since I can not get past the big heads for the most part.

I'm not crazy about some MLP art. For G1, some of it is cute (and I ADORE the animation used in the pilot for the TV show) but a lot of it is kinda eh. I mean, the back cards are beautifully done, but the ponies themselves aren't always to my taste. I never cared for G2 art, mostly because the ponies all have those too-happy eyes that I'm not a fan of. G3...a lot of it I find horrible. Just like you said, the way they drew the faces/heads sometimes just looked bad. But after couple years, I saw a huge improvement and I loved a few vectors (or..whatever) they started to use on the back cards. But I really dislike the animation. G4 I actually really like!

Not me.  I LOVE G1 art, G2 is growing on me, and while I like the cartoon style for FiM, the boxcard art for G4 ponies is a bit generic.  And I love custom art by pony fans too... :silly:

I don't really like G3 art as much as the toys. For G3.5, it's the other way around!

I love G1 backcards, images, and coloring books, all of it! However, the animation from MLP and Friends got very sloppy and a little rushed. I've never really liked G3 art, animation, backards, etc. I love the G4 cartoon and animation, but the backcards and images on the merch is really boring and overused.

I looooove G1 artwork.

I agree with you on G3. I love the way the toys look, but the box art and animation was... odd. "Pink pit bulls" is a great way to describe it, haha.

I love the G4 style and I think it works really well when animated, but a lot of the clipart they were using in the beginning was cheap looking and off-model.

Starting in G2 a lot of the images for the ponies were the same recycled images over and over.

A lot of the backcards for G1, the artwork for the ponies is very unique and you rarely see it used again:

Just take a look at Cherry Treats back card for instance (because it's the only one I really have scanned online), a lot of these images are kind of unique and dynamic and created to work together as a whole set of ponies - along with the background they are set in. G1 backcards seem to me, they took a lot of time to create. It's not like they just used the exact same image and slapped it on the backcard. They put the whole set of ponies, using different artwork for each pony and then gave them a unique story.

Seems to me hasbro took a lot of time to do some awesome drawings back then and made your pony buying experience unique to that pony and his/her set. I got tons of backcards and a lot of them are fricking awesome IMO

Yeah, took time to create for certain. They were airbrushed by an artist. There are occasional eye mistakes (like Raspberry Jam there) but otherwise they represent the ponies very well, and have a "storybook" feel to them.

THIS.  Vector designs that have been assigned an orientation to be slapped onto boxes is not art.  At least in the G1 production, an artist actually had to sit down and paint those images and then they were used in other mediums.

I love the g1 box art it brings me a nostalgic feeling. The g4, what I don´t like is the vector art of Trixie and Lyra, they seem a bit recolors. The new ones seem to be simpler that the previous.

Nope I cant say I agree except perhaps in regards G4 - yes G2 started the clipart style sometimes and G3 continued it but both of them still had much more imagination and depth than the basic "1 of a half dozen images recoloured" thing that G4 absolutely excels at.

For me G1 backcards are what vintage toy collecting is sometimes all about - this is actual art - created by an artist, hand drawn and almost every single backcard is unique in its style and ponies. It makes packaging special, it shows a consideration and an investment in the product. And I find most of it incredibly beautiful.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
