This is a nameless pony that was never made into a toy. Many consider her to be a prototype for the Rainbow Hair ponies that came later that year, or perhaps a prototype for Lemondrop, who came with the stable playset and a pet orange cat.

Like Dragonflitter said, she doesn't have a name in the special and wasn't a toy, however there was later on a porcelain figure released that looked a lot like her called First Born. Pictures from the show and the porcelain figure can be seen here. http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/First_Born

Ah the mystery of time! Yes the mystery Rainbow Pony never was given a name or a toy. I think there have been customs made of her though.

Thank you for the answers! It's a shame she was never released because she is adorable. Aside from the exact symbol, do you think Raincurl resembles her?

Haha I had the original VHS tape as a kid and never saw them either, not until years later when they released the special on dvd. I think what happened was, the way they cut the footage to put it on VHS tape cut off her symbol in most of the shots.

I call her Lux Arcus.
She's an unnamed character who was never released as a toy. Some people tie her with the porcelain figure "Newborn."
She's probably some sort of subtle "background pony" referencing the rainbow of light or even the animation company (Sunbow) that made the special

That's why we have Confetti -  a good replacement for someone who really wants a pony who looks like the mystery pony but can't. lol

Mystery Pony is a timelord, showing up in the background of major events but not actually impacting the story.  :P
Sorry, too much Doctor Who for me...

She is so very mysterious.  They easily could have added in more of the early ponies (Seashell, Sunbeam, another one of the collector ponies besides Cotton Candy, or PEACHY - who actually came with Twinkles the Cat) but instead they gave us this strange, unnamed, non-toy pony instead.  I think it was a very strange marketing decision, since every other pony in the show was available as a toy.

Due to the year this movie came out and the ponies that were around that year I kinda think it was meant to be Confetti
Probably doesn't own a stolen piece of the Taj Mahal.

Buuuut... the movie came out a full year before Confetti would be released, and no other ponies from that year were in the show. (Plus a rainbow symbol is very different from a confetti symbol.) Also note the four colors in Mystery Pony's hair (orange/yellow/green/purple) do not match the wave1 or the wave2 Rainbow Hair ponies!

My guess would be she was supposed to be just a hint at the forthcoming Rainbow Hair Ponies. There was a special for the Rainbow Hair ponies that was never made, supposedly coming out after Rescue at Midnight Castle, so it would not be surprising if they included a pony to get little girls thinking about the 'special rainbow ponies' that were supposed to be coming!
Thank you Thimble for my amazingly cute avatar!
