Any experts on antique stuffed animals here?
« on: January 31, 2013, 03:47:07 AM »
I got this dog from my grandmother when she died (more precisely my mum got it, I was only five at the time, and she then gave it to me). I call him Lassie because I thought Lassie was a boy when I was a kid and I always remeber admiring him when we vere visiting my grandmother.

Recently I've started to wonder when and where he is from, there's no tag or anything, and my google skills aren't much use either. I realize it's a long shot but if you know anything at all or can point me in a sort of general direction where I can find more info I'd appreciate it very much.

Here he is:

(The collar is not original, I put it on him myself ages ago. Heh.)

Oh, he's cute!  And looks very well-made; the ears and mouth look very realistic.  Sorry, though; can't help any more than to say that he's cute.
Nirvana grails:  Reverse Gusty (upgrade), Peru Windy and Moonstone (upgrade), Brazil TAF upgrades, Argie Powder w/ white hair (upgrade), French Windy and Moondancer (upgrades), Spain TAF's, TE's, and piggies.  These are my biggest wants, but I'm looking for tons more nirvanas, especially Greeks, Brazilians, and Peruvians.  Feel free to PM me for sales or trades.  But please note that I'm also fairly picky.

Try the Antique Week community.  (It's an antiques newspaper, and they have a section where you can post pictures to try and ID something)

http://antiqueweek.ning.com/

If someone here doesn't ID it, I mean.

He looks very well made, if he has a small button in one ear (or a tiny hole where one used to be) he could be steiff, he looks like that sort of quality.

Never seen one before, however, I do know a few antiques dealers that are also friends of the family, so can ask if they have ever seen / know anything about it for you :) worth a shot.

kellyponyfeathers: Yep, he is a real cutie, I love him so much.

DGRequiem: Thanks for the tip! ^-^

Shaiyeh: Nope, no button unfortunately. He's a mystery doggie. X)

fingerpaints: I can't find any holes at all in his ears. And after an afternoon of googling stuffed dogs he seems to one of the prettier ones. ...He does look an awful lot like the Steiff collies though. http://mysteifflife.blogspot.se/2012_02_01_archive.html

I wonder if there are Steiff fakies...

My first thought was Steiff as well, but whatever he is, he's gorgeous!

Lassie is a boy. At least he is in the tv/movies. So I'd say you are covered. I love the plush but no clue what he is other than he looks like he's supposed to be a German Shepherd Dog.

Really? I always thought Lassie was the female equivalent of laddie (as in boy) but yes, he looks like a German Shepherd, right? I don't know what Steiff was thinking when they gave him that colour and called him a collie! X)

Well, I know even less, lol. It seems like Steiff made a sitting collie too though so I'm going to assume he's one (or a really good copy) until I know better. ;)
