Oh Taobao, new Blind Bag prototypes

I saw this several weeks ago and had no idea what to make of it. Pink, yellow and purple guy ponies are kind of cool, though.

Whatever it is, there are at least a thousand of them, so I am guessing not prototypes. Maybe they were doing tests to see how well the paint adheres to the plastic? They clearly won't be released ever either, since they are just a jumble of different symbols and eyes.

I thought prototypes were more something you would make 1 of originally when designing the pony. Then I think Hasbro orders prototypes to be made  in the factory sometimes, which are very limited in number and get used for promotional photos and stuff. Prototypes would be the original design of something, and these guys do not look like the original design of anything.

If they are prototypes, it is sure hard to tell what they are designing here.

These folks have been on eBay for some weeks now, and I'm pretty sure I've seen them get bid on for time to time, so yeah, there do seem to be quite a few in existence. I still lean heavily towards prototypes, though, since they keep getting the wrong cutie marks, e.g. Pinkie Pie in various colors with Fluttershy's or Rainbow Dash's. Maybe the "frosted" look is indeed in the works, but there's no way these are the specific final designs.

(The angry stallion eyes are from Barber Groomsby in the Wonderbolts wave, for those of you who aren't recognizing them.)

Ok I do kind of have to laugh at the Pinkie Pie one where they didn't even bother putting her head on correctly.

Maybe these are rejects from an upcoming set. You know how we saw those Big MacIntosh and Lemon Hearts see-through ponies? Maybe these are from that same set, except the finish turned out too dull (frosted looking). Then perhaps they gave them a second lease at life at the factory by sticking eyes on them and some cutie marks. I would imagine trying to pawn off eye-less ponies might be difficult.

I really do wish that we knew more about everything that goes on behind the scenes.

That's really interesting that the Pinkie mould manages to look so different with just the head moved around.

I saw these the other day on Tao Bao, I wasn't sure if they were new or just test ponies that hadn't been fully polished/glittered. I assumed they were factory tests because they are colors we have seen before, with no symbols, or with error symbols like the yellow PP with Rainbow Dash's symbol.

Unfortunately the pinkie pie isn't a new pose, just one where her head is turned. >.<

If they are new it would be cool. They may be the new style of BB but I don't think these ones shown at all are new BB, only tests.

I think that's all the are unfortunately - that finish on them has been floating around Taobao for a while to be honest. The Pinkie is just her head misaligned, the eyes are from Barber in the most recent wave 7 of Blind Bags and the symbols are all Rainbow Dash's. Unfortunately I am guessing test prints and general practice. At best the frosted finish may be something we see in the future but honestly I would guess it was a production test when they were creating the transparent waves.

The next wave of BBs will be transparent again and it is made up of a release of a lot of the characters we have already seen unfortunately - Royal Riff, Big Mac, etc.

I think they are color tests-  I actually bought a set similar to those above from Taobao cuz I love prototype stuff.

I can confirm that one of the Pinkies appears to have a loose head- so her head does turn anyway you want to turn it-    All of my Pinkies have Fluttershy's symbol oddly enough...

the "mean pony" look has indeed been around a while- I totally thought that the Barber pony was a bad guy until I got the official blind bag- in which it explains he is a friendly pony who likes to cut hair-  boy did they get that expression wrong!

No- I think they were color tests for the glittery ponies (like from Target or the glittery ponies in the blind bags)  - also possible they were color tests for the new two color glazed look.
