Who else is a Geneology nut?
« on: January 12, 2013, 02:03:09 AM »
After watching far too much of "Who do you think you are?" I restarted my family tree, and thanks to a few very helpful cousins, I have managed to find all the way back to 1765!

I have also discovered that my ancestors attempted to settle the Auckland Islands!

Who else loves discovering family treasure troves?

It fascinates me but I've no idea where to start since apparently my family knows very little about its self outside of who is currently alive.

Mr. Stomper certain is a genealogy nut. Whenever ancestry.com is having a free trial period, he's taking advantage of it. What I find interesting is that I thought my ancestors went from England to America and stayed there since. But some of them went to Canada (Wiarton, Ontario to be exact). I have a Canadian heritage too. :D Pretty cool.

i would like to be, but my family tree is a shrub. mother adopted. father adopted and never met. both at a time when adoptions could be truly private. it's hopeless!

I know a fair bit of my genealogy, back to 1760 on my mom's dad's side.  That's all the German and Polish ancestors in my line.  I know my mom's mom's grandparents were off the boat from Ireland, and I have a Holocaust survivor on mom's dad's side.  My dad's dad's family is all Cherokee (I maintain documentation and affiliation.)  I'd love to see if there's anything even further back.

My mom is obsessed with genealogy. :) She's traced her side of the family and some of my dad's to about the 1500's, but is still working. Apparently some of my ancestors fought in the American Revolutionary War and the Civil War, which I didn't know about until recently!

We have pretty much ONLY Scottish & Irish (Norse and Celtic, all the way down) on my mom's mom's side (grandma #1) with Russia and Ukraine on my mom's dad's side (grandpa #1).
And my dad's dad (grandpa #2) is Pennsylvania Dutch (Swiss-German) and Cornwall whereas my dad's mom (grandma #2) is Russian-Jewish.

We had some family in the Holocaust, sadly. And there is also supposedly Cherokee on my dad's side, but mom hasn't researched that yet.

Not really my thing, but since you are also from NZ, would you be able to tell me the best avenues for searching these things?  My gran is wanting to find out a few things before she goes.

SDS - one of my mother's ancestors signed the Declaration of Independence too!  :)

My parents have done quite a bit of genealogy - A major thoroughfare in Los Angeles is named after my father's side of the family (my maiden name) because they were one of the first Spaniards to settle the area.  So the boulevard was named in honor of their rancho.

My husband has recently gotten into it - of course we're Mormons, so it's a pretty common hobby for us to have, lol!

I am, but I've never gotten very far. I know my ancestors on one side were Rus' vikings. The other side is mostly German, some Polish and Lithuanian.

My great grandfather interests me the most. He was a Soviet scientist who worked on a government compound in Moscow. When he left the USSR for reasons unknown, he came to the US and became a Freemason, and a very important one at that. I have a lot of his Soviet and Freemason belongings. I don't know what most of it means though.

I know a bit about my family history, but not as much as I'd like.  My mom's side of the family is German and Irish and on the German side, we've traced back many many generations.  Nobody of particular importance though.  Same with the Irish side.  My dad's side of the family has been in the States since before they were the states though.  We traced back to family members who came over on the Mayflower, one of George Washington's generals in the Revolutionary War, and I'm related to Mary Todd Lincoln.  So that's pretty neat.  :)

Which ones?  Wouldn't that be funny if you two were distant cousins?  :silly:
