anyone knows how to crotchet?
« on: January 11, 2013, 02:37:24 AM »
Hello there!
due to an amigurumi present, i came to teach me crotching too.
its a bit hard to learn, becuase i am lefthanded, and i always wondered why my stuff looks so different and curls in the wrong direction. ^^"
however, i tried tons of tutorials for the basics and made this frog for my stepdads birthday:

(the tablet isn´t dirty, these are unremovable acetone spots XD )
and this was just because i know how to crotched a flat rectangle, the circle-start and a tube, with a little increase and decrease.

but now i would love to make me a lama, my alpaka wool would just fit perfectly!
http://ankin.deviantart.com/favourites/2275722#/d2sq12z
buut then i saw the pattern, and i lost my confidence. O.O

all these shortcuts! O.O
i mean, i can understand english, i can translate the abbeverations too,  but i still have problems to imagine how to handle yarn and needle according to this .^^"
increase is, that you put 2 loops trought one loop you use as a base, right? and decrease is when you jump one base loop and use the second one?

have you crotchet much? have you tried amigurumi?
please feel free to show them! i would love to see your projects! :D

i've been crocheting for almost 20 years. eegads. i usually do an increase as two stitches done in the same stitch. and a decrease either as skipping a stitch or crocheting two together. i'm assuming you're doing a sc decrease. so put your hook in the stitch, pull up a loop like normal. put your hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop. yarn over and pull through all three loops.

i think you're right with the increase and decrease, but i am hopeless at reading patterns or the crochet lingo. i taught myself to crochet via you tube, cause written instructions just weren't working. if you search in you tube for crochet increase or decrease, there's bound to be a video that you can learn from. i'd pause the video, practice what i just watched, play the video again and so on. but i can still only do granny squares and rows, and scalloped edges - that one i did manage to learn from a pattern  i have trouble with all the symbols - they just tend to overwhelm a little. and some countries say double crochet whereas others say treble crochet. but your frog is absolutely gorgeous!!! that is way beyond my capabilities, and i look forward to seeing some more :)

I also crochet. :) The pattern looks very simple, and I have no doubt that you can do it! You are correct on your increases and decreases, and kaninchen described a simple decrease perfectly. :) If you want help with techniques, especially for left-handed crochet, check out Planet June. She has great guides and some free patterns to practice on! Also, check out her invisible decrease. :)

My mom taught me when I was younger (I made some really basic squares that I used for saddle blankets for my toy horses). But I've forgotten everything about it, except that I did enjoy it. Maybe someone I'll try it again (also have never tried knitting).

Oh kiwi you are lucky for your mum to have taught you! My mum is the best crocheter ever, but wouldn't teach me! I don't think she has the patience anymore! You tube is also good for learning how to knit, I also self taught myself that, but found written instructions with diagrams that were so simple to follow.

I can make a mean...chain.

My grandmother taught me like 25 years ago how to crochet. I have lots of yarn and books and her advanced books but I have never been able to actually make anything other then a single chain. I know how to do other stitches like a double chain and such but thats about it

One of my learing how to crochet books has instructions for both righties and lefties.

woho, so many! i thought this technique might be quite unpopular! so glad to hear how many are interested in it! XD

for everyone who still just masters the rope: i could just crotchet just a rope for years too! XD but i continuosly make process and it gets easier and easier! :D  you should try it too! :D also, the left/right hand thing is okay if you know about it, it isn´t even a problem for me know. ^^

kaninchen!! i am totally impressed by your work!
the capelet is beautiful, how long did you worked on it? and the dr. who blanked made me smile. ;)
the multicolored yarn looks very precious, did you dyed it by yourself?

kezrob, thank you a lot for encouraging me, you know a lot more techniques then i do! XD
yes, youtube is a good source, but i prefer pictures. on videos, you have to stop and review a part when you try, pictures stand still. XD

MLPlyte, your chebacca looks soo cute! even my boyfriend said "ahwww" as he saw him. ;) how did you got the fur? did you brushed it out?  planet june is a goldmine! i learned from her how to make the start-ring barely noticable.^^

eviecorn, feel free to show us something! or just start again! XD

jwalraven, your work is so great! and you made so many already! O-O my favorites are the pokemon. XD the paras would definately be something i would try too, was it a free pattern or your own?

kiwi, do you still have these pony-blankets? you should show them of, things you worked on as a child are so precious! ^^ and yes, try again! it´s really calming.

tikibird, maybe it would be easier to go back into if you try? i will keep my eyes open for tutorial-books too, especially for both-hands-instructions.

i felt encouraged by all of you and started my alpaka in short breaks i had inbetween. it´s all done ecxept the body now. XD

yes,it looks very funny. XD  i already started tobrush it out a bit too, you need a bit of power, but its soo soft afterwards!

you all, do you prefer one kind of yarn?
i heard cotton would be best for amigurumi, but so far i loooooooove my alpaka wool! thin yarns tend to leave a very hard surface. ^^"
do you have any recommodations?

and did anyone tried coloring wool/yarn at home? i´ve read german crafters import kool-aid to color thier wool. XD
if you have, please show us the result!

The paras pattern was one I came up with. I will refine it some more and put it online sometime. There is this nice listing of pokemon patterns on the web: http://pokepatterns.blogspot.com/

I crochet! I'm the type who starts a lot of projects that don't get finished though. But right now I'm working pretty consistently on a Wreck-It Ralph blanket that I'm pretty sure will be completed in a few months. (Based on the pixel art on the movie posters- http://www.digitaltrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/wreck-ralph.jpg) I'll be sure to have a pic up here once it's done!

Emuel, I love your stepdad's froggie! What a cutie! :lovey:
