Polypropylene hair and heat?
« on: December 17, 2012, 02:13:36 PM »
Hey everybody:)

I'm using Polypropylene hair from My little Customs on a custom I'm working on and I now want to use oven bake clay on this custom. I went and rehaired her already without thinking ahead. I don't want to have to take all the hair out. But I also don't want the hair to melt if I bake her.

I know Nylon is safe as I've done that before. Buy Polypropylene? The website has no info.

Anybody ever done it before?

I haven't done it before (I don't reroot).  But Dollyhair's website says that their polypropylene is heat safe.  I think it should be more heat resistant than nylon.  I used to bake polyproylene panels at 385 F in an industrial oven.  (Some cars have polyproylene panels, and the paint is baked to cure.)

I haven't found this to be the case. When I tried a flat iron on dollyhair's polypropylene it fried it, but I'm able to use the same iron at the same temperature on nylon hair with no problems. I'd strongly suggest doing a test bake with a few strands of hair.

Poly can boil perm at a low boil, however it's not recommended for high temperatures- such as the oven.

If it's the color changing hair or the glowing ones, I've been told by the providers that they can resist heat, but I wouldn't dare putting them in the oven as it could damage their color changing ability. Could you try with a small amount of hair on a trial pony?

Otherwise, you could cure your work by boiling it :)

Thanks for the replys everybody:) It would only be for 15 mins at 130 degrees Celsius.

I think I will do a small trial just to be safe. I could use apoxie sculpt but I'm slowly starting to dislike the stuff and I'd rather not.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it.  I would go with Malancaiwen's suggestion of boiling your sculpt work to cure it instead.
