Cupcake or Sugar Cup?
« on: December 04, 2012, 10:38:54 AM »
I bought Twinkleshine the other day, and I was looking through her leaflet. For some reason, they listed Cupcake as "Sugar Cup". Does she have a different name in the UK? o.O

Totally, Vulpy.  I think she was named "Sugar Cup" here in Europe, while Cupcake was a more North American name. I don't know about the rest of the world though.

Sugar Cup is one of my favourites. Looks like they couldn't decide on a name, or how they wanted her hair to look, lol.

I convinced the blind bag sprinkle stripe is meant to be the same pony too. They seemed very confused on settling on a name for her.

When I bought Cupcake, her packaging said "Cupcake" but my receipt said "Sugarcup".  I thought that was strange.

Sugar Cup is a cuter and WAY WAY WAY more unique name.

Just like how Honeybuzz was a more original Bumblesweet in the Blind Bags

She actually was released in the US at the start as Sugar Cup as well, I remember a couple of people found her that way at the time but it was very brief, she quickly turned up as Cupcake instead. Therefore I am not surprised she may have been listed in a retailers system as Sugar Cup.

However, because it was such a small release, she did pretty much become Cupcake in the US and Sugar Cup everywhere else I believe very quickly.

Not sure if I found her in the store here in Sweden or on a trip to Copenhagen Denmark - but it's Scandinavia all the same :P

Either way the one I got was labeld Cupcake.

I always figured that "sugarcup" was the British English word for what we call "cupcake" in American English. Like how they call what we know as "fries" by the word "chips."

Hmmm I wonder why the name change for her in some places

It would be curious to know as well which came first. She certainly is called Cupcake in more places than I thought - I remember initially it seemed to be Cupcake in North America and Sugarcup in the rest of the world. But it sounds more like Cupcake everywhere except for in UK, Scandinavia and South America where she is Sugarcup. That's a very weird split [although the UK and Scandinavia are often grouped together in toy lines], especially considering she was initially released as Sugarcup in US before becoming Cupcake. I would have speculated that she was perhaps always supposed to be Sugarcup but perhaps got a change for market places where cupcakes were a lifestyle item; but her first promo shots in box always have her tagged as Cupcake which is more likely to imply she was always supposed to be Cupcake and Sugarcup came afterwards.

Changing a toy name from market to market is reasonably common and certainly something we have seen with MLP in the past. Its all to do with market perceptions and identity and whether a name is recognisable enough.

Edit: @Ren-Ren - We call them cupcakes too but that being said they are no where near as dominant a product in UK culture as they are in the US. In fact I would say cupcakes are very much perceived to be an American thing over here - so its likely the name change here was because HB marketeers or retailer buyers didnt feel cupcake was recognisable enough.
