I think you only get them when your friends send you a 'gift' or leave a treasure chest? I try to send them to everyone each day but sometimes my friends list is really buggy and lags, too.

Glad to know I'm not the only one accidently spending gems.  I was playing way to much while I had the flu, but I must have wasted 50 gems by clicking the wrong thing.  I don't get the 'get free gems' thing though.  Maybe that's US only?

Anyway, I'm stuck on the "get 15 chests" quest.  Anyone playing?  I could use a hand =)  GL id= buttercreamdream

Seems I'm having the same trouble as everyone else.  Have 23 friends in Gameloft, but only 16 show up in the pony app.  Restarting the phone, relogging GL, resetting-  does very little to help.  I've been able to send hearts every day, but to do chests on my iphone, I've found it needs to be directly connected to the computer.   
Go to the right hand scroll in the app, connect to Gameloft, then choose to go back to game.  If it connects at that time, you can access other friends' ponylands.  If it lags out during re-connecting, I've found the social function and friends list won't work on mine.  I've been able to send chests this way, but it's extremely fiddley- and I've only found one chest so far so guessing that others are having the same difficulties.

I've sent some requests, but sadly enough, half the time I try to send gifts/treasure chests it gives me an error!! I hope my buddies are trying to send me treasure too, because I haven't gotten any. Dang buggy game!!
