Blind Bag Custom WIP Doctor Whooves
« on: October 07, 2012, 08:25:38 PM »
So my sister dropped off this little lady to me at work today (really, there I am filling ornaments when Eluluu comes out of nowhere and chucks a Blind Bag at me. Not that I'm complaining mind you). We'd been talking bout me easing into customs and I wanted to start small. Hence the blind bag. So I have a few hours to kill before I head to bed so I wanna turn this :

So anyone wanna walk me thru this? Where do I start. I literally have an Exacto in my hands and paint on my desk. I'm gonna do this right now. I'm gonna skip a few steps I know I should do (mostly prep. I don't like prep, its 10 at night, and its only a blind bag so I think I can skip it...maybe...am I being foolish?) like removing old paint and priming the figure. Her hair bugs me so I'm thinking that's the first to go...but I'm kinda nervous making that first cut. Do I cut it off or sculpt around it? I think I'll keep the bangs but the tip of the tail and the rest of the hair should go.

Cut off the ponytails and end of tail.... it's okay, you can do it!

Kk sounds good. There will be minimal sculpting because my sculpting skills are...well to put it nicely...non existant. Come to think of it...my painting skills are pretty sub-par too. Why am I doing this?

O yeah! Who can resist that face :)

Well I've chopped of the tips of the hair and tail. Still not thrilled with the hair but will have to do till I learn how to sculpt. Filed it down using a nail file :) worked pretty well too. Slapping some base paint on her but prolly should have primed it.

I have never primed mine and I've done several blind bags. I do have an airbrush though. I told a friend of mine not to be scared doing your first sculpt on a blind bag (or paint either) because, as I see it, it's a cheap experiment.

I have some Sculpey and I was planning on eventually learning how to sculpt on ponies, but doesn't Sculpey have to be baked? How do you bake a pony without melting it? I need to do some more research before jumping into sculpting.

And here I am now. Literally waiting for paint to dry.

Ok, now I'm getting excited. It's starting to look like it should. :art:

For a bit there I was getting worried about brushstrokes but they seem to have smoothed out quite a bit. I wonder if sealant at the end will fix that totally, like topcoat does for nail polish.

So this was just supposed to be a quick little thing. Something to do to kill some time before heading to bed. It is now an hour and a half past my bedtime and I'm painting cutie marks. I think I really need to hunt down some more of these little guys and paint some more

Here is the beginning of the eyes and cutie mark:

Well I think my first custom is offically done. He needs sealant and I might fiddle some more with the cutie mark but over all, he's done. The eyes turned out better than I anticipated. I think I'm gonna take a walk down to my local Wal-Greens (wal-greens has them right?) and get a few more to play with.

Final shot of my pony. No topcoat yet but not sure if I'm gonna seal him.

aaw he turned out really good fox. for brushstrokes all it takes is a few layers, and thin out your paint with water a touch, just make sure it dries thouroughly between layers or youll wash off the underlayers.

im refraining from OCD ranting about always always always priming miniatures. left over gamer habbit.

Thanks guys. I know it's a pretty basic custom compared to what I've seen on these forums, but it was alot of fun and now I'm eyeing my g3 baits with more interest. I was so afraid to do anything to them for fear of doing it wrong. These blind bags really helped me get over that!
