Wingers - Hong Kong vs China
« on: September 30, 2012, 05:06:42 PM »
So I just noticed that I most of my wingers are made in China, but I have a Buzzer who was made in Hong Kong. Is there any significant difference?
Hong Kong is a darker colour than China, and her symbols seem slightly bigger and a little less opaque.
Looking for: Alternate Birthflowers, Baity wingers, So softs - both minty and for deflocking - and DREAM BEAUTIES!

There are minor variations for each of the Summer Wings, depending on which country they came from.  I have a few sets, pics are here:

That about sums up the differences... No difference in price, although I am still looking for a HK Skydancer w/ o regrind. I think the HK seem to show their age quicker, but the hair seems to be of a higher grade (frizzes less).

Everything Baby Sugarberry said.  Lady Flutter's color is a darker pink in the version made in China.  Even my Sky Dancers from China are darker.  The differences are subtle and I really had to study my ponies closely to notice.   I can snap a few pics tomorrow for you Pythia.

The regrind on Sky is horrid Chipster!  I have one who is just awful.  Poor little thing:(.  Do you think it's the type of plastic used that causes some ponies to be more inclined to get regrind?

There are a lot of sets which have both HK and China versions, I know there are variations but they are incredibly minor - tending to be the colour of plastic, the colour of paint pigments in the eyes/symbols but its shades of a difference rather than out right changes. Different factories, in [at the time] different countries therefore different batches of plastic and even slightly different production processes perhaps all account for the differences. Sometimes there can be an occasional, and very very minor, size [plastic setting] difference in some sets as well.

There is certainly no price difference and neither one is more sought after than the other.

I think its cute to have some from both locations - congrats!

I have a few doubles of the wingers because of the China vs HK releases :) Some of the subtle differences are neat to see in person.

I also have both versions of MO Tux, one is darker than the other which was a surprise!

With a lot of the MLP line form that era you will find that the HK had forelocks where the China didn't. Good comparison sets are the Sweetberrys and TAFs. I've noticed my wingers are slightly different in their sizes, shades, and symbols. All very subtle but awful if, like me, you love variations.

Hmmm well I have a question. Between HK and China version which ones tend to get rock hard quicker (lose there plastizer[spelling?] quicker)? I have to Lady Flutters (one was customed) that are both HK but both rock hard

I think most of the HK ponies seem to develop more issues than the China ones - but the main factor with that could be that HK are the early part of the line and China the later - so perhaps issues are still to come on ponies manufactured in China?

All of my China girls are notably softer than their HK counterparts - however this may not be an aging issue, but different plastic formulations.

I remember my childhood Buzzer and High Flyer being extremely hard (only Boysenberry Pie was harder plastic in my herd), and pretty sure they were HK.  My High Flyer was grey-purple rather than the bright purple of the China variant, and my Buzzer's symbol was extremely hard to see (a notable difference of the HK version).
