They are called "helping hands" many people use them for painting small details on models. I use them for just about everything

Was it very hard to get the tape under the wings? I am always terrified of breaking my sculpting and don't have a good technique down for that yet.

Nope, pretty easy.... just make sure it's painters tape you use
