Customing advice/question
« on: September 19, 2012, 01:01:57 PM »
I'm thinking of trying to make a custom doll of one of my rping OC's after seeing some other friends do it with pullips and neneroids (?), both of theirs costs well over $100+ and.. I'm not feeling that so much. XD

I've had some experience with customizing ponies so hopefully I can figure it out.  I assume rerooting hair is similiar and if not I can just buzz their hair and clue a wig on?

So here is my main question.  I have a character that is dark skinned (she's Inuit) but I'm afraid her actual skin tone is probably not an exact match to either Clawdeen, Cleo, or Nefera.  But for those more experienced with the dolls which character do you think is the closest skin match for her (as you can see below her skin tone varies a little bit with each piece of art so.. I've got a little wiggle room)?

Also, if it is Clawdeen, are the ears molded to the head completely or can they be removed (even if by like sanding and stuff).

Thanks guys!!

Here she is with two different outfits/designs

*EDIT*  Snagging a Nefera for Polaris and a Clawdeen for my kitty girl Dahlia.  Stay tuned for more newbie questions.

First of all, I love your character's design <3
To answer your first question, rerooting MH is exactly the same as ponies, just more rooting area.

I compared the first picture to my SC Clawdeen (I'm not entirely sure, but there may be variations between different releases of the dolls) and it was pretty close. Your character's skin tone is warmer than Clawdeen's a bit. IMO, your girl's skintone almost matches Robecca's. If it weren't for all of the grooves and bumps I'd say Robecca would be a good bait.
I don't own her so I can't say much, but perhaps Howleen? Her skintone looks close to the second picture. She may be too short though.

If you do use Clawdeen or her sister, their ears should come off if you cut them with an exacto knife. After cutting them you can sand the rest down. Do know that when you cut off the ears there may be holes left in her head (I've never de-eared before, so someone else will probably know more than me).

I hope I was helpful, if even just a bit :)

I think Clawdeen would be as close a match as you can get.  She's also a beautiful doll too.

I love your character design, the art is so nice!  She reminds me of a Senshi!

She is an OC senshi in the sailormoon based rp.  Sailor Polaris, senshi of magnetism.

Thanks guys, it was very helpful!  I actually looked into the robot one too, but those rivets are so distracting.  I'll take a look at Howleen too.  I actually have a Clawdeen hiding somewhere away in a box (when they very first came out I bought one thinking it was pretty awesome but it got hidden away in the move and I haven't bought any since then).

Off to ebay to start checking prices and Howleen's skin color.

Howleen is a very close match to Cleo. I honestly would go with Cleo, or Nefera if you're looking for a bustier/more feminine figure. I'd imagine Clawdeen would be too dark.

Your character is beautiful :) I'm sure she'll make a stunning MH custom!

Edit to add:
After checking my Nefera against Cleo, Howleen, Robecca and Clawdeen, I think she's the better match. Nefera is a little darker (I'd say by a few shades) than Cleo and Howleen, but only a few shades lighter than Robecca and even lighter than Clawdeen. She does have a slight gold shimmer but least she already has human style ears  ^.^

After looking again in daylight, Nefera is actually quite similar in colour to Clawdeen. I still think that Nefera is a better match though :)

Thank you guys!  I'm trying to get my hands on 2 Nefera's.  One for customizing and one for keeping (she is SO pretty).

If all goes well then I'll probably be trying to get my hands on a Clawdeen to do my kitty girl.

I think you are making the right choice by Choosing Nefara, because Nefara have a more golden skin tone than Clawdeen. Nefara also have a sharper face mold that I think will look better.
And Yeah Clawdeen is probably a better match for the Cat girl

Nefera sounds liek a good match.  Also remember that when you change her hair to white it will make her skin appear a little darker in contrast.  Can't wait to see her!

I just found a great tutorial for customizing MH dolls. I am going to try using the paint she suggested when I go to make my arctic fox girl

Oh thanks a bunch for the link!!

I managed to snag a nudey Nefera for $15 so she's on her way, but I ran into another little bump. XD

I was originally going to buy Abbey's ice skating boots and paint/mod those, because they seemed perfect, but I saw somewhere today that none of the other girl's shoes really fit Nefera?  Haaaa.. guess I'm going to have to be making some more stuff from scratch.
