What is happening to my Minty???
« on: September 17, 2012, 12:12:03 PM »
This morning I noticed something odd about my G1 Minty. She has these little spots all over her!!  :scared: I've never been much of an expert in pony afflictions, so could someone please help me out?? What is happening to her!? Can she be cured!? And can it spread to my other ponies???

It looks like pindot. Have you tried cleaning her?

I would do an oxyclean soak, and a scrub with an old toothbrush while she is in the oxybath :)

Keep her away from your other ponies, it can spread. But it's easily taken care of with oxyclean as mentioned. I used bleach, myself (and ruined my ponies hair, lol) but it sure cleaned all the mold out!

Pindot is hard to get out- I have used remove-zit which I can't find on the market anymore- other people have had succes with regular zit cream and sun (but it can cause fading so be careful and try test spots)-

Washing pony inside and out with bleach solution can definitely kill/slow down- but alas pindot eats the vinyl and leaves little craters that can be big enough that they need to be filled

I know it is too late for MInty- but it is easier to prevent than fight this affliction...

Some things that have worked for me:
If you are storing your ponies- keep them with silica gel (like from shoe stores or you can buy huge packets various places)
If you live somewhere that it gets humid- use a dehumidifier if you need to keep the ponies out- or don't keep them out all the time- cycle them through some storage with silica gel.   Never store ponies in the basement- it is constant exposure to humidity that helps the pindot grow-

Give her a bath in warm bleach water, scrub her with a baking soda paste to get the surface stains out, and then you may need to sunfade the rest of the spot away.  :)  Don't panic, it's just what happens to G1s as they get older.

I wouldnt use remove-zit on her if you can track it down - its been known to leach the pigment out of the plastic unfortunately.

Its a tough one to say what it is...I can see she has an age mark under her symbol which is caused by the plastic break down and zooming in on your picture some of the marks look more like cancer/age marks than pindot unfortunately. However I can certainly see the pindot dirt around her hooves and the bottom of her legs - for that oxy or a serious scrub in warm water should shift it - there is a good tutorial in the cleaning thread at the top of the Corral. I would see how much of it that removes and then you can judge if anything remains and if its age marks.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

If it's pindot, it is fixable :) I've removed pindot from a few ponies with oxyclean. It's not easy, and it will take time (took me a few weeks on each pony and lots of soaking) but it's do-able!

From the shine to her legs and the spot under her symbol, I think her plastic is starting to break down. I bet if you popped her head off she'd be sticky on the inside. She can live for quite a long time like this and may even turn hard as a rock which should protect her plastic from further breakdown. I would keep her out of the sun and not use remove-zit as it may give her white splotches. A diluted bleach bath will help kill anything living on her.
